Staples culled 500 employees this week. If they can't take care of Staples what will happen to ODOM?

I have worked for all 3 companies. The Staples RVPs are berating, hateful people. They come in, destroy you up and down about your chairs being in the wrong overhead and dust on your baler. They badger your customers about silly services they don't want. And yell at you on the floor in front of customers and associates. Their specialty is making female store managers cry in front of strangers. It's a lovely place to work.
It's only a matter of time. The way things are run, so much time and money is wasted. Did a price change on the same item 3 times in a week. Costs time, paper, ink and payroll. Just a huge waste.
Buy out is not likely to go through, but either way, both companies are in deep trouble.
If it does go through, yes, I would expect a massive amount of layoffs and store closures across the board. In addition they will be putting anyone they can on a PIP to reduce severance / UI costs.
Staples does not even want the majority of stores it already has, they do not want 1500 more. The buyout is all about the commercial contract side. I am sure they already have started to analyze what stores to close. Most of the corporate and support positions would become redundant and I would expect in most cases the existing Staples infrastructure would remain and the OD infrastructure and positions eliminated.
Need to face the facts. Merger or not your position is at risk. Big box office supply stores are no needed. Layoffs will come hot and heavy in the early Spring. Store closures will start very soon. Don't sell yourself or family short. Get with a new company quick. TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Bed Bath & Beyond are growing like weeds. You loyalty to Depot/Max is going to hurt you if you don't leave on your own. You don't want to go through the PIP process. It is degrading.
Do you even have to ask. You better hope the merger gets nixed because you probably wont like the resulting effect. 1000's will get "culled", I assure you.
