Let's be honest there are a lot of low or average performers that need to be let go. Getting rid of them will only make us leaner and better prepared for when prices recover.

Agreed, know plenty of IT folks that either work their ass off, carry more than one persons job and then you see people like Bill Miley walking around worring how cool he looks or who's ass he can kiss while taking 20+ smoke breaks a day. Get to trimming ;)
hate to break it to you, but that's not actually how the layoffs work. it's straight numbers. some of the strongest engineers were let go as part of the october layoffs in canada. it's all about what seat you're in.
There at least 3 people on my hall that do nothing except play on Facebook, YouTube, and Netflix all day. And they don't even try to hide it in any way! What sucks is that our boss is too disconnected to even notice so someone who actually contributes could be cut instead of them...

Start with the know-it all millennial's whose first job out of college was Devon. They just think that's the way it works, rather than realizing Devon is not the norm. No more gelato or mid-day frappies.
