so sad to see so many people lose their jobs..... retail landscape is so tough right now.
did Staples Canada see any layoffs happen? or is this just a Staples US thing?

Never saw this email or any other that named names or acknowledged any terminations other than Ron's email on Monday that mentioned restructure. Was this just an email to CA folks?
Yes. Many associates across all business units (notnretail stores) were termed, including those in Halifax. I personally am included in the "Let Go" group from the USA.
Leaving out specific names and roles in the interest of privacy, here is the notice sent out by the CEO:

Folks,
Staples has once again had to make some difficult decisions that will enable us to fund and execute the growth initiatives that are crucial to our future success. A number of changes were necessary to allow us to compete in a rapidly evolving marketplace. As a result of the changes, there were a number of positions that were eliminated throughout the company and the following associates were impacted:
(REDACTED - at least one of these is/was on maternity leave)
I realize this comes as a shock to everyone. I can assure you, these decisions are never easy nor are they taken lightly. Many of these individuals were long tenured Associates who have contributed in many ways to the success of the organization over their time with Staples. I want to personally thank them for their contributions and wish them all the best in their future endeavours.
