Thread regarding Devon Energy Corp. layoffs

My two cents...

For what it's worth... I am employed by an o&g company that laid off around one hundred people last year. I was 'lucky' enough to have been offered a 'transition' to another state to continue working for said company. So this post may be a little bias, but hopefully it hits home for some of you...

You should really consider not berating the company that you once called 'the best company you've ever worked for.'

You should really consider counting your blessings that you ever worked for that company to begin with.

We all know NO ONE in Oklahoma pays what O&G companies pay. You had the opportunity to be part of that. You should be thanking your company for that opportunity. And if you are/were actually a quality employee, you will probably have the opportunity to be part of that AGAIN some day. You just have to be PATIENT. Let this downturn come back around. Companies will need to replace the workforce they laid off. Just be ready for that.

To all of you who say 'The managers, officers, etc., should fall on their sword instead of laying off the 'worker bees.'' Sure, if you want the company to go completely bankrupt and in turn, you lose your entire 401k or stock benefits that you had invested in your company all these years.

It's selfish to think 'SOMEONE ELSE' should have taken the fall instead of you. Is it fair? No. Is it business? Yes. It's the business you signed up for when you accepted that 100% pay increase to join the industry.

I wish all of you the best, and for those of you who 'get lucky' and make it through this, let this be a lesson on humility, and count your blessings. And take a close look at your financial planning. Sadly, you could be next. Sadly, I could be next. But I wouldn't trade this industry for any other that I've worked in, and if the day comes where I'm locked out of my computer and called into a conference room, I'm going to hold my head high and know that the skills and relationships I built at my job will stick with me for years to come.

thank you, Great post. Sure, I would be disappointed if i were let go and its a possibility. but what other industries are offering salaries, benefits and even severance packages like Devon does. especially in a weak commodity market. I've been lucky to have participated in this joyride for as long as i have. what i've learned that it's in my best interest to work hard, contribute to the success of the company and prepare for then inevitable market fluctuations that are part of the industry. its happened before and we're all grown ups, nobody should be surprised. the 'booms' are incredible and the 'busts' always suck. if my job is eliminated, its part of business. i'll be taking my stuff and walking out the door with almost half a year to figure out the next move. make no mistake, when the market turns again and if the opportunity presents itself i wont hesitate to jump back in. hopefully, I'll do a better job of finding a position that remains necessary during a downturn or work hard enough to make the cut next time. this state needs these companies to remain strong. they can't continue to support non essential personnel and keep the lights on. it would be a shame to have them irreparably damaged by keeping so many spoiled employees with entitlement issues in jobs that aren't feasible in the current market on the payroll too long. maybe i contribute by taking a severance, I've worked hard and its not personal so i'm ok with that. until that happens I'm 100% committed to the job at hand. you people with the company remember that most content on this site is actually crap. use your heads folks.

Amen Brother. One of the few comments worth reading. Devon is a great company, one of the best in the industry, they won't be if they don't make these cuts. I will bleed Devon blue for years, if I continue to work here or not, buying more stock, completely undervalued. It really is and always will be Team Devon!

Amen. People keep getting mad at management, who hates this just as much as we do, when they should be mad at themselves for not being smart with the substantially higher salaries we get for being in a risky industry. I've been here less than 3 years and I've saved enough to live comfortably without a job for 12 months.

Also, instead of complaining how about people find a way to save money for Devon so that maybe they'll be valuable enough to keep. If I don't make it, I'll be bummed but willing to come back at any time because of how great it's been. Good luck everyone!

Do you have any recommendations? I've been with Devon for 4 years, and don't have any other work experience. I graduated high school, but never went to college..so I'm somewhat limited in what my offerings are. I'm pretty good at receiving and sending emails, and do so probably 10 or 12 times a day. Other than that, I've pretty much just stayed to myself and looked at charts all day for the last 4 years. I have a feeling, that I will be let go today. Any ideas on jobs here in Oklahoma city/Edmond that pays $130,000 or more for my skillset?
