Thread regarding Marathon Oil Corp. layoffs

Layoffs in February - To Be Announced at Earnings Release

From a mole in HR who is still at Marathon, layoffs will be announced at the next earnings release. So you that the company does not benefit from a "surprise" announcement of layoffs coinciding with release of earnings, please ensure that everyone you know is made aware of this forthcoming announcement. Lee Tillman should have more respect for the remaining employees than to have layoff announcements coincide with another poor earnings release, seeking a short bump in stock price by putting yet more people out into an already saturated market.

So how many people were cut today?

The post was accurate. There are involuntary reductions occurring last day of February, just as was stated in this post. Though employees should not be caused undue stress by posting false information, this post was correct.

Plus, previous TAP was capped at 62 weeks. So not sure how ex MRO survivor got 18 months (78 weeks) and that full tier 10 bonus. Either way, sad that they are commenting on this site. Like an ex-GF stalking you on Facebook and leaving comments on your wall.

@ Ex-MRO Survivor

How about don't gloat ever? Everyone knows that good people were cut in February.... everyone. I am genuinely happy for the people who received generous packages and found positions after round one. The fact that many of the subsequent survivors will not be so lucky is a damn shame and not something to gloat about. I am not sure what you are trying to prove by rubbing your situation in the current MRO employees faces.

As one of those affected by the Feb 2015 layoff, I can tell you that a lot of the wheat was knocked out of the company as well as some of the chaff... but there is STILL a lot of chaff at MRO; technical people with no discernible talent except schmoozing, managers who couldn't do their subordinates' jobs if you held them at gunpoint, and senior personnel whose functions are unknown, valueless, and immeasurable. For those who have sat back smugly at MRO with the conception that they were saved because of their awesomeness as employees, please allow me to tell you that those of us 'released' last February have almost all found positions equal to or better than those taken from us. Thanks to the first-round (and very generous) layoff compensation, we received a hefty severance comparable to over 18 months' pay and our full 2015 bonus as well. Don't gloat until you're out there competing with the 8,000 recently laid off from Conoco... or the 6,000 from BP... or the hundreds from BHP... among so many others.

If you don't feel the need/interest to be worried about POTENTIAL layoffs this month, stay off this site.

Nothing wrong with a little levity with POTENTIAL layoffs.

Yes, who is the HR mole. Somebody like that who freely runs their mouth should be made public.

If you do not have factual information please do not speculate. The times are challenging for everyone in our industry and especially at MRO. Do not worry employees unnecessarily.

Eagle Ford will get trimmed heavily to give room for management favorites. HR will walk on water this time.

Bakken will see its fair share gone. Put 10 mro's in a line and 2 will be gone. Contractors will be cut also.

Field contractors were cut in the last few weeks. Safety and Environmental policies were changed to justify the release of these contractors.

In Feb. my team lost 65%. The reductions have been targeted to reduce sectors viewed as loss leaders.. Many companies adopt this procedure as they shrink to nothing. To me the real question is how does MOC compare to its pers such as Anadarko, Apache, and Hess.

All the tier 4 people in my department are managers, but they would not dare let themselves be ranked accordingly. Ask them a question and they have no answer and some of them have been at Marathon over 20 years. What have they been doing the whole time? One would think a certain amount of knowledge would be retained by simply being exposed to it on a daily basis, but these people must have the memory of an earthworm. Most of the day they congregate in each others offices and discuss how they plan to decorate their retirement homes or giggle and laugh at each others feeble jokes. These are the people that destroyed Marathon Oil and will be the same ones that walk away millionaires while the company goes bankrupt and the rest of us are left to find another job in a depressed market.

There were many talented, well respected people that were let go along with nearly 400 of their closest co-workers back in February 2015. I'd hardly call any of the people I am aware of Tier 4 Slackers. Infact, I wouldn't say that any more than I'd call you a better employee because you're still holding on by the skin of your teeth. Good Luck to you though! Wishing you the absolute best.

This topic has already been posted and is common knowledge. OP is just rehashing old news.

That's the way a forced 10% ranking system works, a continuing supply of tier 4 people. The challenge is finding a way to increase the frequency of ranking to keep up with the pace of the quarterly reporting.

I thought they got rid of all of the tier 4 slackers last February. How can there be more? Or, is it possible the tier 4 ratings this year will be as bogus as were the tier 4 ratings in 2015....

I imagine some of those that rejected the voluntary TAP in last round will be included as well.

I have heard the February layoffs could be in the 20% plus range. Does this include contract employees or only Marathon employees? Have you heard if this is field ops or office positions?
