Thread regarding VMware Inc. layoffs

Who will go - trim the fat, get rid of the weak

its the law of the jungle I'm afraid. If you have been mediocre and keep getting a 3 in your perf review you may be at risk. If your a 2 your out IMO. The management teams will stack rank their employees. The directors will stack rank the managers and so on.

They need to trim the company down a bit. The growth they once has slowed considerably. They focus now in NSBU so you should be fine there. However they have hired way too many directors and VPs and that will be hurting the margins. I would focus back to basics. Increase the manager coverage to min of 10-12 reports. That way you get rid of the management fat. It's the good troops in the field that make the diff.

A good rat is to swim and escape from a sinking ship!!!

Even a good performer has good reasons to worry!

If you are confident of your performance and value to the team, you shouldn't worry about the layoff of 5%. This is still the case at VMware. The ones who are most worried about layoffs are the first ones to be laid off. So if you genuinely believe you are good performer, then stop reading this web site and go back enjoy your weekend.

The law of the jungle it may be, but as the previous poster stated, it's not survival of the fittest, it's survival of the most politically astute. I've worked at VMware since 2005 and I've seen numerous rounds of layoff--and plenty of times the people doing a good job in their assigned work were laid off and the people doing good job kissing up were kept.

I suspect I'll be one of the ones let go--though you never can tell. Whatever happens, I'm certainly not optimistic about the future of the company

Also, when it comes to layoff, it is not always about performance. During the layoff in VMware in 2013, some of the layoff occurred to the entire groups, including the managers.

LOL, when it comes to mass layoffs it's always the politically savvy that stays and has no much to do with your performance.
