Thread regarding Chesapeake Energy Corp. layoffs

Should we start sending out our resumes? looking for jobs?

I am asking on behalf of all the employees at CHK - should we be sending out our resumes and looking for potential jobs?

Management will always paint a rosier picture than what's really going on. As Oklahomans, we can't let our good-natured ways make us blind to the harsh realities of business.

Bosses are going to cover their own butts first before they cover yours. Furthermore, the higher up you go, the less information gets passed down. Why? Because the CEOs job is on the line. He's not telling all his lieutenants all the details - no way. And the flow of information (i.e. an honest assessment of the risk of the company's financials) slows to a trickle as one moves down the management hierarchy - it's a funnel where the most vulnerable people are the ones at the bottom, who don't get any information. I've seen it happen many times with companies in distress. Doug may be optimistic, but optimism is still a bet. I am optimistic that the OKC Thunder will win the NBA Championship. But that's a very risky bet to make - would I put my job on the line for that bet? Absolutely not.

Yes. Especially if you are on a niche position that is still heavily staffed at the company or would be considered non-essential to the core business. Even if you wait to see if you survive another round of layoffs - it may not be a place you want to work due to the fact that workload doesn't seem to change. Unfortunately - I know some feel trapped by the golden handcuffs. If there are any big financial moves you want to make - like refinancing do it now and maybe try to pay off as much as you can. There's no telling what severance packages may look like if there's another layoff. I've seen former co-workers find jobs within a couple weeks of layoffs while some are still looking since the last round. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

your resume should always be up-to-date and posted to sites like RigZone, LinkedIn and OilPro,however, right now there are only a handful jobs out there and they are for very specific positions. you should be prepared to work in another industry for a while and make less money. be sure you make a list of your transferable skills.

I would be checking your competitors websites regularly and start putting in applications over the holiday break. Few openings in OKC, I've seen a couple for both of the companies in the towers but your skill set has to match. Another competitor has openings but again the skill set must match and you are going to move to Houston. If you have a technical degree, i.e. Engineering, it's probably a perfect time to hop out of the industry if you want and hiring in non-commodity related or deflation related industries is quite strong due to favorable demographics. I have heard after the past layoff, superiors (at probably the right level to make decisions) told their subordinates they were not asked at all who should stay or leave. Even if you plan to stay through another round, I would still submit applications to others, best case you get offered a new job with a more stable organization and you can always decline an interview. Best of luck to all of you.
