Thread regarding Devon Energy Corp. layoffs

How safe are accountants?

I have always hears that accountants are the last to go. Has anyone heard of any rumors related to any accounting departments? You can definitely tell that moods have changed, and everyone is on edge. I work very hard bit starting to feel uneasy!

My experience is that there is no "last to go" when layoffs happen. Pretty much most departments get hit unless they're already really understaffed then maybe a dept might escape a cut but at that time everyone will likely be overworked in that dept. In today's economy, there really is no safe place. Hell even IT is seeing a HUGE migration of jobs to overseas.

Dick,

Well said and so true! I truly love my job, but one door closing won't be the end of the world - I am a damn hard worker, and I should look into doing something for myself!!

No such thing, NEVER will be as long as you work for someone else.

You want that level of comfort then create your own company or idea and just do it!

Always be prepared for your number to be called and when it is you won't have anything to worry about.

Given the landscape I would advise against making any STUPID purchases being in the OKC job market like a new home, car, etc.
