Subject: General Dymanics NASSCO-Norfolk Will Issue Conditional WARN Notification to Employees
From: NASSCO-Norfolk Human Resources Department
Dar NASSCO-Norfolk Employee,
As you may be aware the transition to the Navy’s new primary contacting structure has caused NASSCO-Norfolk and other repair yards to face a short term dip in Navy repair work in the Port of Norfolk. Based on our current workload forecasts we expect to carry out workforce reductions starting in early January 2016. The affected employees and their representatives will be notified as required by the federal WARN Act. Based on the information available to us at this time, we expect that our 880 employee workforce may be reduced by as many as 360 employees in January. The duration of expected layoffs is not know at this time. Between now and January, the situation could change drastically with the award of the Forrest Sherman and Other work. In the days and weeks agreed, the NASSCO-Norfolk leadership team will continue to work with our Navy customer to secure additional work so that we can minimize the extent of the workforce reductions that may be needed. We will do our best to keep employees apprised of any changes in workload expectations. Our General Manager, Kevin Terry offers the following:
“I regret the loss of any member of our skilled workforce. We understand the disruptions that layoffs cause in personal and family lives in our communities. We have worked very hard to make our Company the best value and best price for our customer. However the uncertainties of contract awards in the future make this step necessary. “
