Thread regarding Devon Energy Corp. layoffs

If Devon would get rid of the entire IT department they could save millions. This department at Devon is the worst in the industry.

Full of people that believe they know more than the business. Devon's problem; the worst IT in the industry. Devon- clean house from the top down I IT. This is the most hideous department in all of Devon. Face it you know nothing, and even less about drilling oil. Just have another leadership meeting off site and bring in more donuts for your donut club. Resource managers do nothing all day except gossip and talk bad about people. You make fun of the people who pay for your job. It horrible horrible horrible!! Devon Management look at the IT department and fire fire fire!!! THEM ALL!!!!!!

Why would anyone want to work in this department.

We do not need to get rid the entire IT department. Just let go the dead weight. Agree with previous post, 40% sounds about right.

I.T. is such a broad topic. It is everything from laptops, to servers, to development, to data integration. So I do not know where this user is complaining, except with a broad brush of judgment. I have worked at Devon in the past when it was simply a bunch of spreadsheets and access databases. I was there when things went from 'simple to complex'. Sometimes it was for the better, sometimes for the worse. The worst part is the software purchases. At Devon "we use software up to 20% of it's potential before we find something else"... was the track recorded at that time. All in all, its very difficult for the business to understand systems now days (especially in data). You need 'structure' and rules. Truth-> business section can move faster if you make all the rules as you go. But data analytics go to hell in a hand basket pretty quick. Decisions are not based on data from a single application but from data out of multiple systems. You lose that ability you lose a lot. So yes its a pain, and yes you can move faster without I.T. from a business unit. But you will move "S-L-O-W-E-R" as a corporation.

Agreed with original poster. To achieve real added values, Devon IT needs to review and align their objectives with business strategies. Im in Devon IT

I rekon an outsider is trying to stir up shit within the company with this astroturfing argument. Probably never worked at Devon and is trying to poison the well.

Here's a fresh idea IT - Devon is not an IT company. They're an oil company. I so agree with the statement made by Anonymous196037.

Maybe just fire all the IT managers - they don't actually provide any type of operational support whatsoever and their only job seems to be telling the actual operational support people what they should and should not do regardless of business needs

IT at Devon is worthless. This company is light years behind others in IT.

The expectations of seemingly smart individuals when it comes to technology is really quite astounding. You think IT is easy yet you have zero basis for this assumption. You're quite literally comparing your abilities to work with technology to the ability to keep them up and running. Like everything "should just work" and when it doesn't....IT peeps are f***ing idiots. Guess what - shit is complex and complicated, YO! The real problem with IT is that business managers and leaders think they need similar types of people to manage highly technical IT people. Business people managing IT people is the problem with most IT departments. Develop your technical talent into being good managers and you'll have a much more efficient and effective IT department.

Hey, IT does not own data! The business owns it. If you need non-op data, try data governance....you dill weed. Just like the business...blame blame and NO ACCEPTANCE of their role in dumb decisions.

Sure, fire all of IT and watch the entire company collapse in front of your eyes. We live in a digital- data driven world that is constantly changing.

If you hate information technology so much I encourage you to stop using it and pick up a shovel and start digging. Good luck finding oil that way.

How about you come up with another lame program and implement it before we learn, or you fix, the first one. Explain that IT. Every year there is a new program when the old one is fine. GFY. You ARE usless. Let's also talk about what you do with our data....I'd love to hear the reason why you think we don't need some of the no-op data. TDM sucks donkey balls. You are all a bunch of glorified techs who don't know crap like what data is critical to finding oil. Hey why don't you tell everyone what you do with miss-spotted wells or wells with no apis? Oh, there not important? They sure are when you have a gyser form at surface 100 ft from an on going frac' job. I'm sure the landowner would love that.

Sure, fire all of IT and go find oil with a divining rod. Don't worry, IT will be training all of their replacements from India and then you'll really be bitching about Devon IT.

The frustration you feel with IT, the IT employees feel as well. Do you have any idea that IT must treat ALL Parts of the business like prima donnas? HR, Accounting, Legal, Audit, Land, Corp Comm, Office Services, Midstream, CMP, Engineering, EHS,Supply Chain, Operations and of course Geo. must all be treated with the same level of importance. Again, LEADERSHIP, needs to get on the same page and Prioritize work and level of importance and then allocate resource in accordance with those groups adding value. Stopping running the company based in who bitches the loudest and who you are friends with...so again, when will leadership be laid off?
