Google the WARN ACT.
At least some that I know of were let go, with cause, but got 12 weeks severance. When do you fire someone but give them severance? When you don't have to report it to the state.
SEVERAL PEOPLE WERE FIRED TODAY 11/5/15. Devon fired Geophysicists, Geologists, Engineers, and other professional staff today claiming the firings were "performance-based", and not a layoff. This means these people weren't given a thank you and we're sorry with a few months pay when they were let go, and instead were told they weren't good enough, and given a black mark making it difficult for them to find future employment... My heart goes out to all of the people who landed in that situation.
