Please serious responses only - I am planning to go back to school and I would like to see if I would be able to volunteer for the next round of layoffs and get severance payment. My plan is to quit anyway, and getting that extra money would be an unexpected gift. What do you think, would they consider something like this? I've been with Sprint (HQ) for about five years and I think that I have 30% to 40% chance of being laid off this time. Please let me know your thoughts.

If you ask for that and tell them the reason they will probably hold on to you until you just quite on your own so they don't have to count you in the RIF and pass severance or unemployment.
I heard you can ask and it will be a case by case basis - wouldnt count on it though
