Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Speculation based on facts

here are facts:

  1. QCOM announced layoffs of ~4500

  2. Layoffs are now over and laid off people are out

  3. Company headcount reduced by less than 2500 ( and that is layoff + attrition)

Based on facts that we know, not just some made up bullshizzle, there needs to be at least another 2000 gone just to meet the stated goals that SM talked about in his quarterly call to investors.

Talk about when it will happen are of course rumors and it's fun to make that shit up, but know that something will happen based on just the known facts

Already 4100 people are laid off. U * seeing <2500 is because CSR and IKonos ~2000 joined QCOM.

Check with people hired in the past 4-5 years. They got high packages for SD than companies in Silicon Valley. Many new grads joint QC, and many people switched jobs to QC. Going forward is a different story. QC will reduce bonus and RSU. QC employees should understand that keeping pay in line with the industry is a healthy thing to keep as many companies in business so that you have options when you need to look for a job.

I used to work in bay area, now s.d. I can tell you that qcom did not pay in line with other tech giants (namely intel) except to those people who were ass lickers and got stock bonus amounts of 5 or more (ie, 50k per year or more depending on title, but 50k used to be norm for staff, 70k for sr staff and upwards of 100k for principal). But only the ass lickers got those stock awards.

I had a 5% pay cut moving to s.d. Which is not too bad since housing is way cheaper here even though its still expensive as fvck.

Now, qcom is not even close to pay leader, more like below average. Friends at intel get cash bonuses in the 40k-50k range and with rsus at ~$40k (the grade 9's which are sr staff). Intc base is 5% higher for santa clara folks than when i was at scl site.

No raise and shitty bonus this year only proves qcom awful pay structure. I even heard some staff engineers NOT getting any RSUs this year.....

xtk: QCOM does not pay "way above industry norm" to get good people. Compensation per year per engineer at each level in SD was about 10-15% below same grade in Silicon Valley. In Silicon Valley, the pay was about average per level of expertise expected. Not sure about NC, CO, or TX, but imagine the salaries were only as high as hey needed to be to attract interest from engineers. What QCOM overpays for is people at the management level--Staff Manager or Director and above. And my god there are so many of them! They're the engineering equivalent of cockroaches! Legal isn't much better. They could get rid of at least half the people in legal and replace them with newly minted graduates for half the salary they are currently paying....

Lot of laid off people got rehired into other groups. What is the need to hire more in this business environment is beyond me. This company is unfixable and the VPs will keep building empires until the titanic sinks. Why ? Because empire building and politics are the only skills you will have acquired after 20 yrs in Q

BYOTP

Bring your own toilet paper.

That will help the bottom line.

Pun intended...

QC is dealing with a monster it has created in out of line compensation. It all seemed like a good idea to pay way above industry norm to get good people. So, what do we have? Over paid people, who do narrowly focused tasks that overlap with other groups. What needs to be fixed? First, we need cut projects, and then cut the groups. Then, expect people to take on wider scope of responsibilities. Without doing those things, don’t expect RIF to result in a more effective organization.

Also note that layoffs were to reduce cost, if layoff goal is not met, then cost cutting goal is not met. The market is nowhere near as dumb as SM and will notice this
