Elephant in the room --- Employment Age Discrimination

Age discrimination in the tech industry is widely known, yet it seems like nobody is doing anything about it. In recent years, the discrimination has become more and more blatant, to the point where they consider you washed up by the time you reach your forties.

I was recently affected by this elephant when I was laid off by HP this Summer. I filed an administrative charge with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Through my lawyers, I also intend to file a class action lawsuit against HP alleging age discrimination on a company-wide scale. I am looking for people to join me. Please see my lawyers’ website for more information at http://hpagediscrimination.com/ or call their hotline at 800-572-9464.

Well I got WFR'ed after 20 years at the end of last year. No doubt if you are over 50 they want you gone at HP (now HPE & HPI) The age thing is not just HP but pretty much is accepted in most industries. But I.T. try companies are the worst. The funny thing is that this is so obvious and even the EEOC does not do anything. Just goes to show what they are all about and I just see another government agency we don't need.

But one might as well just accept it. This is the world that we live in now. The only thing they will miss is our tax money..

Let go after years of very good reviews at HP just months before I was to become eligible for retirement benefits.

Over 26 years vested with this dying giant. Worked hard, produced excellent metrics, highest customer satisfaction feedback. Tapped on the shoulder to take on more responsibility all the way to district manager. Even voted MVP. But must have stepped on a few toes of those prima donna's in the ivory towers with voicing my opinion about certain business practices. "Open Door" policy is a huge corporate lie. Bill and Dave were hero's to me. I believed in their HP Way my entire career. I am doing all I can to promote ANY other products out there beside Hewlett Packard. Here's hoping China buys them outright and breaks them apart for good. But wait, China's probably too smart for that...

I was a contractor at HP. Saw a lot of people go in the nearly 15 years I was there. Most were over age 45. Contract companies there also do it.

I was let go at the age of 48 along with 15 others (info shared with me by law) over 50 and one under 40. No cause given and my weeny of a manager couldn't hardly speak to me. I asked how they picked those to be "RIFFED". No answer from my manager who had spent 5 years in high school and was about 8 years younger than me! MEG IS AN IDIOT ANYWAY. SHE IS DRIVING HPE INTO THE GROUND WITH SELLOFFS. There is much more to this than meets the eye. the managers of the sales force have the absolute POWER to give territory to folks that is 1,000's of miles from home. Then a policy is set to limit travel. It is a great way to make you lose business (by design). That is the backup plan when the lawsuits start. And it is also by design that they offer to pay you 60 days pay to give up any right to sue them. The Layoffs and pay start in November (Thanksgiving and Christmas) Or July -- nobody hires during those periods. The entire freaking industry knows this. To feed your family you have to take 15K to 20K pay cuts (factoring in all benefits). Good luck with the lawsuits.... But corporate America does what it wants.

I was WFR'd in November after 27.5 years. Always had good reviews and received excellent customer surveys. We had a meeting 2 months before I was let go showing a 97.88% profit margin in warranty. (Where I was working). My boss said we were not supposed to know that, Then 2 Months later I am told my job is being replaced by a contractor. Whats the Issue? Plenty of Money----Doing a Good Job---Loyal to the company. WHY?--------$$$$$$$$$$$$$$-That's Why. I guess they want 97.9% profit margin.

The "forms" that HP / HPE forced employees to sign in order to get their packages post-WFR have been deemed to be legally null and void by the attorneys in the proposed class-action suit. See Complaint at this link:

Whole teams of people in Houston were let go most over 20 years with the company, all replaced with younger workers in India, or Mexico. it's not right, the end result is customers get an inferior product or service. and the company as a whole suffers. This does not surprise me at all, they should include the lawyers number so others can sign-up

In US, HP enterprise fires US workers and keeps hiring H1B workers...

They are letting early career employees go too. I interviewed for a more senior position after being originally hired as an Engineer I with no promotion after 3 years.

After being told I got the job, I was told that all reqs were being frozen. And about two weeks after that, I was WFR'd with my manager telling me "I was obviously unhappy in my current position".

F--- HP. I'm one of 80k people that now have a personal interest in seeing HP fail.

Ii's the same in Spain, age discrimination.

Here can be worse, even Europe is supposed to be more paternalist is not the case in SPain. The only legal discrimination protected by law is maternity.

"the most valuable asset......." LIES.

I agree with you, and feel I was treated the same, but highly doubt anything can be done, as they make you sign away your life to get your package.
