Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Repatriation Process

I am an expat that has recently been given notice that my assignment has been cut short and will be returning to my base country (USA). Concerns are returning to my org/team with out any role and moving my kids out during the school year. Appreciate if any others with similar situations could share how it was handled or what options might be available. Thanks

I agree. Vote for Trump, the only one who speaks what I feel and know. Both Dems and Repub insiders are members of the same country club that's taking our country to hell. It's time we get someone in a league of his own. Vote Trump for President.

Neither will an establishment Republican help you with worker rights. I for one, prefer an "outsider" who will kick ass. He may not be perfect, but no man alone ever is. I prefer Trump and will vote for him only.

@Dasq, your post was informative until you hinted at the end. Here's my hint: Democrats won't give you Workers' Rights either, just a lot of talk.

Expat repatriation does not guarantee a job. You get an amount of time on payroll in your base country depending on their laws.

Uk is 3 mths + some (about 7-8 total), NL is about 9 mths total. You can apply for as many MORs as you like in that time.

US has the worst labour laws, louisiana is 2 weeks severance. Don't know what Shell will give you.

If you are US citizen then vote for someone who will you give you workers' rights (hint: not Trump).

Shell Bangalore plans to further downsize by a large number. The whole process of downsizing is without due consideration for peoples ability or capabilities. The last downsizing which happened in Aug 2015 indicated that even very good performers were fired. If a company can't even evaluate its staff properly then no one will want to work there. Lets see what happens in the Jan-Feb 2016 Round of firing.

Nigerians working in foreign countries. They are coddled by their unions coming up through the ranks and have salaries way out of proportion with other nationalities. They also receive ridiculous benefits that no one else gets.

Please clarify - Nigerian expats are by far the most expensive for a comparable level

Do you mean Nigerian citizens working in other countries or foreign expats working in Nigeria are the most expensive?

I think US expats are more expensive because of the US tax rules.

I would argue that Dutch #expats are not much cheaper than the American expats if compared at the same level. I think that there is a strong correlation between the national median per capita income and our compensation schedule. If that's the case, you'd have Norway, Sweden, Australia, Denmark, USA, Canada top the list. More details on this here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Median_household_income

Wouldn't worry too much. Depending on who you are, they'll MAKE a job for you. Saw it happen in the Permian group where a finance background person in the position of a planner (not that she did much in the role, but I digress) got shuffled to a made up job and her job was given to Rebecca Schulz because shed been returned to the US due to her husband getting assignment there. It's all politics.

You could try to find another expat job with another company in whatever country you are in.

Carefully read and reread through the repatriation process on the HR website if you have not already.

Dutch labor laws are much different from US labor laws, so Dutch employees are protected. American expats are the most expensive expats, so it makes sense that they might be sent home first.

What a predicament Royal Dutch has put many in. Tsk tsk tsk. Let's like the Nationsls beg and plea and crawl away defeated bc only the Europeans are protected. Royal Dutch has her beautiful orange cloak covering each European expat, patting their back. There there, just be good little expats and don't worry about the jobless nationals that are celebrating thanksgivings at food shelters. Or hopefully food stamp kicks in on time to by a turkey. Too bad food stamps can't buy diapers.

I don't think there is much you can do, unless the oil price miraculously shoots up. Just be thankful Shell will still pay the repatriation expenses.

You're likely to encounter some unhappy coworkers when you come back. Repatriation of expats means kicking someone else out of their existing jobs.
