Thread regarding HP (Hewlett-Packard) layoffs

Big severance changes coming at HP following the separation

Following the November separation into HPE and HPI, all employees will be treated as day one employees. Currently, severance is based on the number of years spent with the company, employees receive a set amount of pay based on years of service at HP or previously acquired companies, EDS, 3COM etc. I'm an HP employee who had my own separation and I learned this information from management (a lifelong friend).

This is a brilliant idea for a company that has many long term employees and needs a way to save money during mass layoffs. I hated getting laid of this week, but according to my manager, I am one of the lucky few, I received months of severance pay and after Nov 1st laid off employees will receive a few weeks of severance. This is valid info from a source in the upper levels of management.

So you're last date is following the separation? I feel this will be the case for the majority of layoffs. Never sign your severance doc until reviewed by an attorney. In the U.S. you should have 21 days to review. It is worth the $200 - $400 for an attorney review. HP has a great legal team who does comes up with the packages, but an attorney will review the details. Ha, I bet the legal and separation teams are bonused for efficiency and # of lay offs without suits. You will be pressured to sign asap, and most people do as they are in shock. Most don't get a 2 week notice either, so you have a chance to research.

Best of luck to you, I hope you land a sweet job and have a good future.

To Anonymous182432 : re: informed of layoff but not being told what your severance will be till the last day - how cold ! I saw HP going down the tube when I was there but this is ridiculous. People there must be going off the deep end with all the crap that's happening now.

HP in the lead for the race to the bottom.

Words are funny things. HP has always found ways around them, like when they had a German-born CEO which conflicted with their Federal contracts, so they re-organized things to make it work. Likewise, when it comes to selling off ES, it's more likely they'd structure it so it appeared, legally, at least, like ES bought the other company.

As for paying severance... nice sentiment, but did they guarantee employees would keep their seniority? The devil is in the details. Sure, they'll pay out severance, but based on the new seniority scale.

When is the last time you've seen HP do the right thing by its employees? When have you ever seen Meg do the right thing? We take ethics training every year, but the people who NEED the ethics training get caught, year after year, with their hands deep in the cookie jar. I'll never be in a situation to bribe a foreign official, or access inside information (and I don't need training to choose not to do something like that), but we still see it happen all the time at HP. At the executive level, ethics seem to be in short supply, and personnel are treated like crap.

This isn't true, if you read the 350-page SEC document related to the HP split, it says that severance will be paid at least through 2019 (those words plus charge-offs that indicate HP will earmark funds for severance buyouts. Also, neither company can be sold for two years.

I was told I have selected for WFR and I have 2 weeks to work. I inquired about a severance package and I was told you be told on your last day. I emailed human resources for an answer and they did not respond back. Getting nervous. I'm losing 5 weeks of vacation not taken (HR Confirmed in an Email) It's hard to go to work everyday not knowing if I will get any severance. Real Bummer......

Good luck to the people still there. Was lucky to get laid off a year and a half ago with severance, looking back it was one of the best thing it could have happened after working for them 10+ years!

Pay cuts in the works? Seems like the CEO and her board feel like they can get away with anything at this point. Damn sure the only people getting raises this year will be executives and high level managers.
