I don't think I can wait to find out about the layoff. We should start looking for a job now.

So the brilliant plan by the executives of HP is to announce WFRs and make morale so bad that others will voluntarily leave the company? Of course, the ones that leave will be your most valuable people, confident they can get new positions, wanted and even desired by HP's competition. Yes, brilliant plan, Meg Whitman. Meanwhile the ones who are clinging to their jobs because they are comfortable do little or no quality work are mostly worried about how to stay hidden in the shadows when the good people leave and the dust clears. Loyalty works both ways, and HP has done nothing to earn that loyalty with its best employees. They'd rather mine a field of manure because it is far cheaper than a vein of gold, and their payout will reflect the leadership's strategy.
Why wait like a sitting duck? If you got the skills and courage to get a job elsewhere then go for it! Why wait until HP lays you off? Why become an expendable pawn in HP's twisted chess game?
We'll that's the whole point of announcing it early. They are hoping that a good chunk of people will jump ship and leave on their own. First, that would eliminate people who are not that eager to work for HP. Secondly, that would allow them to offload staff without having to pay severance and go through the hoops of cutting people off. It's much easier for them just to say bye. I would highly recommend that you start looking right now. It all depends on our skill and geography, but if you are in an area that has low demand for folks with your skills, you will be competing with your peers once they lay you all off.
