How Did Your Manager Handle The Layoff Meeting?

I got laid off from WD in April. My usually-nice and complimentary managers seemed suddenly mean in the layoff meeting. No "you did a good job, sorry about this" or anything. Maybe HR gave them a script and told them to act harsh?

I was ambushed at lunch time on October 13, 2015. My manager lied to me and said he wanted to meet with me to discuss future plans for some projects that were in the works. When I got to the meeting room there was an HR rep sitting at the table. I knew immediately I had been set up to be kicked out at lunch time, when there were fewer people around. Very clever. I really despised this cowardly individual for this type of treatment after years of productive service as a senior level engineer. I thought WDC had gone through a lot to get rid of these types of managers over the last couple years. Some of them always slip through I suppose.

every day you come to work, is this the last day? when managers asks to stop by his office, is this for layoff?

special place in hell for managers who make employee feel its his fault when they lay him off. with angry faces and harsh words and rudeness. then take away his id badge and escort out of building immediately. maximum humiliation to employee.

Dear President Jim Murphy,

Please instruct the managers to stop being evil in the layoff meetings. WD is better than that.

You portrayed a warm-hearted, kindly leader in the WD television commercial last Christmas. WD told the whole world that kindness and generosity are what WD stands for. But your managers are behaving the opposite in the layoff meetings. Talking rudely to hard-working, dedicated employees - many with families to support and about to lose their primary income - like the employees are worthless. It's wrong. And it makes WD's Christmas commercial seem like a big lie.

Pretty similar experience, managers were distant, rude and treating employees without any dignity. I cant believe that after several years of hard work and dedication, you get treated like a door mat. I'm surprised these jerks aren't getting sued for mistreatment of employees. They make your life miserable for a few weeks before the big day, then they take you out in the most insulting fashion. Lay offs happen everywhere, but the way they handle it at WD is absolutely terrible, undignified and inhumane.

Do not give your heart and soul to this company, its a cheap, incompetent organization that is running on its past laurels and only there to serve the stock price and executive staff salaries.

Sorry for everyone who lost their jobs and good luck.

Managers should not be rude when laying someone off. They can deliver the message w/o making you feel the layoff is your own fault. In my layoff meeting, manager was condescending & acted upset with ME! WD should tell the managers to be respectful in these meetings, keep a sense of dignity - don't insult worker being laid off.

One vp from another company said HR told her not to say anything good about the persons work. But sometimes she really liked the person and their work, just couldn't say it to them when she laid them off. Something about lawsuits...

They were typically rude as well. Careful, there's ignorant people on this page who would say "move on man" probably one of the ignorants that don't ever have a job or hiding behind WD. They'd get layed off sooner or later with WD going down
