At 3786, I am the same as 3501.

If you work in South Lake Union and live east of Lake Washington, then you would have to take the bus in the rain and the chill. I work in Redmond, so can live on the Eastside. Houses in the Seattle area are still nowhere near as bad as the Bay Area. 900 to 950 K in the Redmond or Sammamish areas for a 3000sq feet new home with top of the line public schools. Spectacular scenery all around Washington. If you do not mind the rain, Seattle is the best place for a software techie in the ISA.

Here's why not Seattle, from somebody who lives here. Seattle is the anti-car city, actively removing roads from general traffic lanes and making them bus-only or bike lanes (bike lanes fine for SD, but stupid for Seattle at least half of the time when the weather for biking is poor). Traffic is really bad and just getting worse. And go to Redfin and check out housing prices. Crazy. Anything affordable will be either in a sketchy neighborhood, or a one-hour drive from the city. And the transit system is a joke, unless you are lucky enough to live and work along one of the routes that don't require a transfer and a 25-minute wait outdoors in the cold and rain for your next bus. Park and ride lots fill up before 7AM so if you want to drive and then get on a bus, good luck!

On the plus side, the job market is still great!

Pittsburgh. . . the last frontier. Mountains. Snow in winter. Hot--but not deadly--summers. Baseball, football & hockey! Decent schools. Near Carnegie Mellon. Traffic that's not too hideous. You can still get a decent house in the area for about $100K, and farmettes in the exurbs starting at about $200K. ...And the first day of deer season is STILL a holiday!

If you are a fairly competent software developer, Seattle's the place. Salaries on par with the Bay Area, higher than San Diego. No state income tax. Housing even slightly cheaper than San Diego. Awesome schooling for kids in the Bellevue, Redmond, Sammamish, Issaquah Eastside area. Minuses are of course the gloom in winter. Cold(er) though nowhere as bad as Chicago, Minneapolis or even most of East Coast and bad commute. No water problem at all 😉
