My supervisor is pretty much dumb as a cow, and she has the power to get rid of HP IT professionals, funny isn't? Today, there is virtually no loyalty out there, HP, IBM, any company that's around. It doesn’t matter how long you have been working at HP, you can be laid off in a snap. When it becomes financially required to get rid of you, that is exactly what is going to happen, only the well connected regardless of skills or tenure will manage to survive this huge wave of layoffs at HP.

I had a Compaq middle manager who was promoted when HP took over Compaq. Guy was so clueless. Didn't know any jobs he handed out. When an accident/emergency failure happened, he would pretend that it was all under control but behind the scenes he would be panicking and shouting at graduates to fix it immediately. If they couldn't then he would make them update the higher ups about the issue; basically not taking the blame for it.
The only thing he was good for was arranging pointless meetings to get people to stroke his ego and business trips with his friends (graduates never got approved to travel and were ordered to work after hours even though their contracts state no overtime is paid) and
Dumb as a cow? Insulting cows (cows that go moo) isn't good! Is her name Rebecca? I never had a mentor or a leader at HP. The managers couldn't manage themselves, much less anyone else. Further, they were busy padding numbers and hiding reality from their customer. The customer has recently become wise to this unethical group of thieves. Thankfully, there's 1 year left on the contract. Only then will HP be kicked to the curb. Way to go jerks. Only HP could screw up something that could have been profitable.
I'd probably say that "Retired_and_Glad" is onto something here - I'd say 50% Good, 20% Clueless-Business-Neutral and 30% Detrimental-to-Business ratios fairly solidly break things down for HP. There is a 5% Exceptional category in my opinion. That category would include folks that I would follow regardless of what they embarked to professionally accomplish, they typically provide superior quality mentorship and skills transfer
27 years with the company and had 16 managers. 8 Good, 2 Mediocre, 6 Useless.
Good: They understood what the team members did, Their presence enabled the team and the individual. Their prolonged absence hindered the team.
Mediocre: Didn't matter if they were there or not. Hadn't a clue what anyone did. Chair warmers essentially.
Useless: Their presence had a negative effect on the team's performance, their absence was a blessing. Totally incompetent.
Pretty much every middle manager l have experienced in HPES UK is a turgid leftover from EDS - in particular the DWP (government) contract. Still waiting for the real higher ups in HP to realise this. Recently Meg spoke about a frozen middle that she's apparently addressed since she took over as CEO. Maybe in the US, but not this side of the pond. It's not so much frozen as ROTTEN.
Most managers at HP are pretty good. You are unlucky
