Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Good Ole Boys Club

I'm not trying to be a conspirator but I had a conversation with security yesterday and they told me that everyone walking out the front door with a black folder are the ones being given a package. They started keeping tabs on the demographics. She said most of the people they've seen are old or "brown". That's pretty sick. Seems like if you are not born or put into the "network" then you are ousted. I'm a redneck and I didn't graduate from a good ole boy school. The writing is on the wall for me. I just feel sorry for the people that have the best degrees, work harder than me, and will get walked out just because... I get it now... I totally do. And Shell is allowing this?

Of all the smart ass responses, I see that no one commented on Anonymous144893's post. Not even an HR troller. We all know he/she is right. This has been the culture around here for years and it is still going on. I can testify first hand that this is an issue. I am in one of those rare zero tolerance groups but see this kind of thing happening at Westhollow on a daily.

Anonymous139910 and Anonymous140046... I've been reading comments on this site for a while without posting anything but I do want to say something now. I'm Black and wish Shell would just put me out my misery. I've been "playing the game" for Shell, and other major companies, for years. I come to work earlier than my peers and leave later, just on principle. I take on 3x the workload. I basically do twice as much to get half their recognition and pay. People tell me to be glad I'm employed but living in misery and fear is not an option anymore. My boss treats me like a damn lap dog. For example: Tina went to UT with Scottie. Mike worked with Christina. Larry knows Bill from the country club (not actual employee names but you get the point). Then it's me... the lazy, incompetent, defiant, 1/3 of a human being that does all their work. Over the years I've been reprimanded for various things when I see my peers pushing the limits. I know employees that take a nice 1.5 hour runs/workouts for lunch, arrive at work around 11, hit up Top Golf at lunch for 2 hours, run LONG errands, take 10 smoke breaks, run up the company card on trips, or claim they are working from home while not answering any emails or IMs. But these are the people consistently getting promotions and surviving the layoffs. If you think racism doesn't exist at Shell you are a damn fool. And it's not just Shell. Look at the other message boards. Indians don't stand a chance at Baker Hughes!

Anonymous139910, I think that's exactly what they were saying. As far as Hispanics...if is has to do with Venezuela or otherwise making big money in a Spanish speaking country then we're fairly untouchable in Shell. Use that fact to your advantage.

What are you saying? Blacks don't kiss ass as well as white boys? What a f***ing idiot. That is the most racist crap I've ever heard, probably second to the "social relativity" comment. It's people like you that make minorities hate working for companies like Shell. I'm Hispanic... what do they say about us at Shell?

Of course managers keep their favorites! No sane person is debating that fact.... From what I've seen, most blacks don't "play the game" because of their own personal pride so they get left by the wayside in times like these. Then there are others who play it really well...at the expense of social relativity of those that look like them (I.e.Jonathan Daniels)

I kinda agree with the poster. Skin color may not be a primary reason but I do know that most of the managers look out for their favorites. And it is pretty obvious that they aren't people of color that are being saved. Managers do have a say in this process. And with .85 being the cutoff, they have their fair share of picks, especially people that haven't been there long enough to see more than .9.

The last poster is full of sh!t. Skin color inherited have nothing to do with the layoffs. It is plain and simply a numbers game set up by management, nothing more and nothing less.

Anonymous137946 I agree with the older comments but the "brown" comment hits home. I am of "brown" descent and I have been at the company for 10 years. I was forced out. I can say that over the 10 years I've been here... LET ME STOP. I don't want to sound like a civil rights person but we all know who's getting cut. And even if it's not a skin color thing, it's always something behind a decision other than random lottery or a legit scoring system. The people on this site need to stop pretending like management is not having these private discussions. I've been a part of these discussions at other O&G companies as a manager and was told to get rid of a certain number. Do you think my personal preferences didn't play a part of that decision?

if you think people working security know anything about what's going on around here, you really are dumber than your post makes you out to be.

Of course is going to be the older people, they cost more, generally speaking. Ask for ones that are brown, do you mean Hispanic are African American and heritage? You should be a bit more clear when making accusations like that against such a large entity. In any case, I highly doubt the layoff have a whole lot to do with a person's skin color, that is why Shell has a huge legal department that studies things like this and come up with legally fair ways to get rid of people. It has nothing to do with where they went to school, what their degree is in, or how hard they personally work. Everything is relative to what the business needs to make money. Your comment really proves that you are nothing but an old country redneck that has nothing better to do than sit in his mom's basement jerking off and searching the layoff forums trying to start bullshit.

If that's the case then stop your whining and get off your ass to do something about it. Complaining on an internet forum and telling everyone how sorry you are is just a coward's way of going about it.
