Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Have you slowed down recently?

I don't know, but it seems like my entire group just doesn't give a shit anymore and has slowed down significantly. And it goes as high up into some of the more senior managers. I see people actually leaving work at normal hours, sometimes even much earlier... I guess no one really cares until after 7/22

Is it me or does this layoff process feel very much aligned with what happened in the movie "office space" ? Would be really something if the consultants would start actually interviewing the directors and VPs to make them justify their ORGs..

Waiting for another review cycle seems weird though..waste of time and productivity since there will be none.

Anonymous118124, yes of course but some execs actually want to make the right decisions. Not repeat the same fiasco every 2 years. No serious shareholder is going to fall for "blame the consultant" excuse. That would be his legacy on the way out to CEO palookaville.

It's all show so SM can protect his ass and shift blame to BCG if things get screwed up and take credit if it works out...you are naive if you don't understand how this game is played...

If the perf review data is suspicious, how will the external consulting company make good decisions? Garbage in garbage out

Anonymous117918 seems to be making sense...current business environment can not support 30k+ employee,we are way over bloated and corrections need to be made. Where the cut to be made is tough because very underlying internal issues which made this crisis worse also made internal performance review data suspicious..so having an external eyes look in to it and come up with list without internal political influence seems to best possible option...its not perfect but seems to good way to go about it...

I am skeptical but it seems Anonymous117918 has some info and he is not making thing up entirely,This seems to be smartest way to deal with it current situation.

If what Anonymous117918 says turns out to be correct I will be very-very impressed with SM's leadership.

117804: Where have YOU been! Morale in QCT has been far, far, less than ideal since about 2013! Hope a certain director gets canned....

i think that the layoffs are mainly done by the consulting group which was mentioned in the last earnings ..... with the reivews being external ......every person's fate is on their past reviews and other documented information that is provided to the "layoff" consultants who will be more or less impartial in their decisions.

Thats why VPs have left or are leaving....the other thing is there is not much information on this topic to other people even VPs because it is done at the highest level....and pink slips will handed en-mass....

if they see the samething done by engineer -- mentioned by manager-- mentioned by director -- mentioned by VP in their reviews...then they will know who did what....

moreover no system is perfect so some good people will be gone in this exercise.... read what Intel's CEO's said about meritrocracy and layoffs today.....

If you are thinking by laying off and streamlining would make things wrong

The biggest factor qcom is in this position is the commoditization of wireless chips

As licking wont work this time. SM knows that this what caused rot in Q and he is carefully picking each name himself...SVP and VP are not immune either....

Tighten your belt ( or balls, your choice) and be wait for "new and improved" QCOM 2.0....Currently final kinks are getting worked on and release coming SOON...

Slowdown is due to all the people pushers crowd being busy in lickicking asses to save themseves from this chopping...

Anonymous117812: I think most of folks are pissed off due to half cooked infomation in all hand and slow movement by management on layoff front.

I have no sympathy for folks who are afraid of layoff because they are incompetent and no longer marketable and just intend to leech on QCOM. BUT there are lot of other folks who are being proactively approached by other companies ( I know at least 6 folks in this dilemma) but most of them are outside SD and they need to decide if they have to uproot themselves from SD and move or stick it out and trust this leadership to improve things. I hope you understand specially its very difficult to move after school starts...

Personally I am closely watching this layoff process and will decide my next move based on quality of SM and his team's performance.....my preference is to stay because I had good time here and most things messed up in only last couple of years.I have seen many companies recover from short term glitches with even better culture, but also many time its just a patient on death bed dying slowly and if that's the case you want to run as soon and as far from the company irrespective of cost

Anonymous117805, there was no confusion if u just read between the lines. Activist + cost cutting + low margins + financial engineering = massive layoffs. It's the fundamental equation in tech. Most people in qct are in denial. They see new buildings go up and think all is well.

I bet mediatek used to look up to Qualcomm. Now Qualcomm wants to copy mediatek in a deflationary commodity death spiral. Maybe 2019 will bring server chip glory. Smartphones are so passé (like heroin)

This due to incompetent executives...M&C messed up last all hand ,provided lot of confusing info and did not provide good answers...that made people very worried.

Yep. Morale took a huge dive immediately after the QCT all hands. Gets worse every day.

Most of the folks I work with are very frustrated and demotivated...trying to do as minimum as possible.

This confusion is costing company dearly..SM should finalize the reorg and make announcement to get clarity asap so folks can focus on work ( or looking for other work). Keeping things in this limbo is a lose-lose proposition...

What's the point of continuing to work 70 hour weeks at this point?

Especially when even if you get through this one they are planning on another in sept/Oct?

The 23 all hands will be the standard "let's focus on the future" BS, when the future for the engineer in the trenches is one of steady decline and eventual layoff.

Same for me. Everyone seems to be phoning it in. Lots of basic issues happening across all teams.
