Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

What software skills are in demand right now?

I have had enough of the incessant rumor mongering and rampant racism in these parts. Let's discuss something useful for a change. I am sick and tired of working on the C\C++ filth that Qualcomm peddles as 'software'. Besides, it looks like these jobs are concentrated only in certain areas of the country. What software skills are in demand right now in the market on the basis of which you can eke out a decent living for the next decade? Java? .NET? Python? Machine learning? AI? I am still fairly hands on and I think I would be able to pick up some of these things fairly quickly. Would it be relatively easier to find jobs in San Diego with certain skillsets? Unfortunately, my family has their roots in San Diego and I cannot simply get up and leave tomorrow to the Bay Area in case the inevitable happens

You're asking the wrong question. Your asking which programming language is hot. Programming language doesn't give you a better future. knowledge of an entire platform, and how to design/create/implement an architecture does. If you have to ask, you don't know and you are well behind everyone else who is capable and already doing.

So either (1) enterprise cloud computing or (2) mobile application software/architecture. If you're an expert at Android from application layer all the way down to the O/S and kernel, you are in high demand. If you can do the same things with iOS, you are also in high demand. If you've worked with connectivity (Bluetooth/WIFI/NFC) on either mobile platform, you are in high demand. And if you're done it with both mobile platforms, you are in extremely high demand. If you've worked on actual IOT projects, you are also in pretty high demand.
