Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Am I the only one who isn't afraid of being let go?

I've been through layoffs now with 2 other companies. It's not a big deal. If it happens so what? Use the opportunity to find a better job or start something on your own.

If ya want laid off talk to your manager and or hr rep. Don't know if they are taking volunteers. Save someone else's job that needs it. I don't need to work any more, so I'll be talking with mgmt next week to see what the package is and volunteer if I like the package.

Anonymous117951 - I just looked it up, and although you do have to report it, it does not affect your benefits..... http://www.edd.ca.gov/unemployment/FAQ_-_Collecting_Benefits.html.....Severance pay is not deducted from unemployment insurance benefits and does not affect your eligibility to receive benefits. The method of payment, such as a lump sum payment or payments paid to you at regular pay period intervals does not change the nature of the payment. However, you must report severance pay at the time you file your unemployment insurance claim.

Anonymous117951 - as someone who has been through 3 layoffs (my first 2 with Cipher Data Products - was with them for 16 years) and my 3rd with Verbatim Tape (was with them for 3), I received 3 severance packages and, no, you do not have to claim your severance package when you apply for unemployment. And yes, the day you walk out of the door with your pink slip, you can file for unemployment benefis.

U don't have to claim severance, and can collect unemployment immediately? Any link from CA to confirm?

Not afraid at all. Been here 20+ years. Severance package will be good. Can collect max unemployment (do not have to claim severance package), plus am retirement age. Kids are grown. House is an investment - can sell and downsize. And get the heck out of CA.

My rent is $875 and its month to month. Gonna hang out in the beach all summer then move to a more startup friendly city. What's good outside the US?

Good to hear there is some solidarity with the same attitude. The time off until the next gig will be welcomed.

I'm not afraid, I'm well prepared if it does happen. I'll take the time off to enjoy the beaches for a while. don't know why others are running scared as if it's armageddon. btw, I do have a family and house too, but i planned ahead. some time off would be nice :)

I am hoping to get laid off... ( sadly there is no way to opt for it -:()

My Idea is to collect severance money as I have spent 10+ year now and I expect it to be decent...and then join my next gig, Current work culture in QCT is suffocating and I was planning to move anyway( it used to be very different culture here 3-4 year back)..

Market is not bad guys...start looking out you will be surprised to see so many great opportunities available outside.
