Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Had a coversation with one of our directors in the break room. It was good to see him relaxed and trying to make a conversation with us.

I say this because lot of other peers that speak are taking this in a negative way. And suddenly the company is a evil place for everyone.

Directors suggestion to us was to stay focused for next one week and take things as it comes. Forget all the bullshit that's going around.

He made a great statement too. We are a company of people not a factory. If it was a factory it would have sold it's equipment if it had to reduce costs. But we are company made of people. If we have to reduce costs we need to let go few of our people.

You might be right about having a monkey in charge. I think that is what we have.

@117615 Who cares how much they were rewarded? So we just hand out millions in rewards for crappy decisions? In that case, let's put a monkeys in charge. We'll still get paid for a spell while the company goes down the drain so it's all good. Ridiculous logic. I guess I still believe in the whole pay for performance thing.

@117605- I came here to read some good information and what I got was a bunch of people complaining about stupid shit and acting like their parents abandoned them in a supermarket.

@117604 - you can't predict the future. they made a gamble and lost. they also did a lot of things right and we got to reap the benefits of that for many years. Who cares how much they were rewarded, worry about your own rewards for your own contributions.

This was the bubble in making for last 3-4 years and was bound to burst....company did very very aggressive hiring last few years and they diluted their hiring quality dramatically...lot of junk is parked at Q now which needs to be cleaned now

@117597 Congratulations on missing the point entirely. I know how companies work and fail. We're like migrant farm workers who move from field to field as they're either picked clean or collapse due to blight. This blight was brought on by poor decisions which were richly rewarded. To casually dismiss such failures when it impacts so many lives is rather stupid. It didn't have to be this way. That was my point. I'm prepared and I'll land a job faster than you if needed. Don't worry about "my shit" and don't assume you're the only genius who invests wisely and thinks ahead.

@Anonymous117437 If i got laid off i won't feel screwed by anybody. if i'm not prepared it's my own fault. no company can make all the right decisions all the time. nobody owes you shit except for yourself man. you got paid right? you got bonuses right? you got stock right? I did and I invested and saved wisely. my resume is up to date and my skills are marketable. if yours are not and you feel the company is screwing you, it's your own fault. get your shit together people

Let's see.... Firing SM would save at least 100 engineering jobs. And for every two directors sacked, you could save at least 2 engineering jobs, and as many as 5 IT or lower level engineers. VPs are probably worth at least 5 other employees apiece.... Considering people at the upper levels should be making enough that they can bank enough to get them through the lean times, it would have made more sense to thin out the herd starting with the fat bulls at the top.

This is the most ridiculous thing I've read yet. So you're completely fine with management making stupid decisions, giving you your walking papers while you keep a smile on your face? Yeah, sure, keep your head down, say nothing, work even harder up to the minute they punt your sheep behind out of the front door. It's because of pliable people like you that companies get away with screwing people.

Let go a few of our people? ~13% is a few of our people? That's gross miss-management. No wonder we're sinking. We have retards like you and your manager.

I sure hope that you and that lousy director will get cut soon. Best wishes.

Or you can sack the C-level completely, and save a billion

At 94/hr it takes 5,000 to save a Billion. That's where the 5,000 number comes from.

At $250k a head, it only takes 4 employees to save $1million. 4000 cut is $1billion. That is where the 4000 number comes from. There is a goal to cut $1billion in operating cost.

Our blended loaded rate is right above $94/hr - that's how much an average Q person costs the company

Actually in engineering, an employee costs 250k/year on the average due to all the costs associated (overhead).

The director speaks the truth. A factory would sell equipment to cover losses. A company of people has only one choice but to fire people to cover losses. Each person cut is a $100k cut in payroll. Faster than trying to sell outdated equipment.

When I got axed 6 month ago. I was told the same thing. "This is unlikely to happen to you, you should focus on your work"," You will be fine. Don't worry there is far more worst out there you will be the last one to get it". And guess what, I won a lottery. Fortunately I am not a 35+ with a 18+ brain. I act much early but still have a tough time to get my resume reviewed. You have no idea how many people out there already. I got couple of interviews before year end and luckily nailed some. Companies out there aren't stupid not charity. They know what is going on. One director told me he receive couple resume from Q in a day. I think he is not a retarder. He knew what's happening. They cherry pick. You know what cherry pick is. Slow and painful process. This time this is in a massive scale. You guy really need to act and stop checking this page. There is no mercy next week....

You should go back to your job hunting and focus. If it is you and you are naive to sitting there waiting for other animal in your building taking all the position out there then that is a real BS
