Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

The matrix

is one of the reasons Q ended up here. It was disfunctional before the exponential growth in the past 5 years. But this org structure can't support a fast org expansion. It is probably the simplest to implement (no structure required, ad-hoc groupings), but very ineffective. What it does it

1) dissolves personal responsibility. Who is in charge? Who owns what?

2) lowers productivity. One can get requests for work from all edges of the matrix

3) requires a super structure of reporting and management that tries to make it look more like a tree, but fails

4) creates node duplication. Multiple projects reinventing the wheel

5) creates hiding places for many that if let go nobody would notice

6) did I mention low productivity?

7) flawed review process. Evaluation done by people that don't even understand what you do. This leads to ranking by personal preference as mentioned many times here.

Matrix is real. It all began when the machines took over….. Oh that was a scary dream. Now back to scary dream at QC. The matrix is a real problem in pigeon hole someone into the same jobs over and over. Because the leads want to minimize risk, they would just keep assigning the same job to someone. Sometimes the only way to get out of the hole is to transfer to another group, but guess what, the same practice repeats again. It is the most demeaning way to treat an intelligent person. By the time you figured it out there is no other better place in QC, you are several years in and probably no good for any other company.

Anonymous115994 : I completely echo your feeling, couple of us also raised it in one of careerX workshop about work culture feedback also... they said they will get back to us in next workshop.......but then all workshops are cancelled.

Per my last few observations managers are not let go but engineers to the extent that you have more managers than engineers. .

The people doing your reviews often have no idea what you do. They'll rely on your peers to write your reviews for you and then pass them along to them. That's fine if you have a good coworker but imore often than not, your coworker is some territorial asshole. Managers at QUALCOMM are lazy. And there are also way too many of themI was on a two person team and they were about 3 to 4 managers. Unreal. The managers don't do shit either. I think I mentioned that. They are the ones who need to go and hopefully the layoff numbers reflect that.
