Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

The criterion for layoffs ...

I have a friend who is at the top of the engineering ladder at a major communications company. He was laid off by this exact same company 10 years ago, but he's been back for many years.

Why did they lay him off? In a department of 30 people, 29 of them were H1Bs and he was a canadian citizen on a green card and top-shelf reviews. So they laid him off !! It is far too harsh to lay off an H1B, they will have to be on an airplane home in 2 weeks! I don't think any of the many thousands of Qualcomm H1Bs have muych to worry about. My friend was laid off on friday and started a new job on Monday, with a 6-months severance bonus!

I think it's the longtime americans that will have a lot to worry about. The company cannot pull your strings and make you do ANYTHING. That will make YOU the first against the wall when the revolution comes !!!

To be honest, if there is no H1B work their ass off, you will not have the chance to enjoy your life in the past 10 yrs. However nothing last forever, it's time to pay the price. Whether the H1B get cut or American. It's not up to you and your logic doesn't even apply to it.

It totally out of you control so why waste your time complain about H1B, many opportunity out there, why wait!

@ Sr. Dir.: Anyone who knows about the H1B process knows companies like QCOM can hire them for 5% less than the going rate for wages for a comparable position in the area. That's 5% less than an employee with similar education/experience. Add to this the fact that the company can get them to work 2 jobs for the price of one, and the green card is paid for in way less than a year. Plus the company deducts the legal fees from it's taxable income. So cry me a river. As for working "extra time," if most of the H1Bs actually were qualified for the positions they applied for, they wouldn't have to work 80 hrs. per week. If a lot of the H1Bs from QCOM spent less time checking in on this board, and FB, and Twitter, stock market pages, & c., and actually spend 40-50 hrs. per week working, they might not have to work 80 hrs. per week, or on weekends. If most of the H1Bs would read the goddam QCOM ethics manual--the one where it says that QCOM will not make its employees work more than 60 hrs. per week unless it's an actual emergency, and hold them to it, the company would have to back off. Last time I checked, CA had laws against peonage.

Lol! Look at these "foreigners took my job" crybabies. Tell that to the Native Indians (Indians.. -- Ironic?? HAHAHAHA!!).

You guys know that this is brought on you by your own kind of folks at high level management making a shit ton of $$$ out of it right? Hilarious to see people praising capitalism when its working for them and crying when they see the ugly side of it.

HR needs to stop Managers from QIPL transfering to SD on h1b. They dont have the people skills and are clueless about California work culture. They dont even practice the use of common courtesy, magic words taught to toddlers - please & thank you. Instead send you a qualstar by mail. Sick.

PS: I would also blame them for dirty restrooms.

Yes, and those of us who simply refuse to "work insane long hours" because of poor project management and a company history of an inability to say "NO" to unrealistic customer requests are "lazy guy(s)". I've always been willing to work extra time to help out when things fall behind and certainly have put in loads of extra hours to innovate or educate myself on new tech -- but a company that EXPECTS an FTE to really be an FTE+++ can get stuffed! And if you're going to call me lazy for that attitude then you can get stuffed as well my friend!

It is simple business

anyone who is relatively cheaper and can work insane long hours would be retained

Cos dont necessarily love h1bs. But they love H1bs for some good reasons

Put yourself as a biz owner.. who would you hire.. a lazy guy or a guy who can put up with long hours

It's not entirely true. In the December layoffs people were let go. And a huge number was h1b. I personally know at least 10 people myself who were h1b and were let go.

I agree with the fact that it's expensive to layoff h1b employee after paying for the visa but when no one cares that they have to get on a plane back to their country. All h1bs get is a 2 months on payroll after layoff to avoid immediate loss of status and then it's bye bye.

What you came across could very possibly be a special case.
