In your opinion, how are things going to play out over next five years. I've been with the company for about 14 years, and every year I hear that the end is very near. Yet, we continue to somehow survive and make even more money. What are your thoughts - where are we going to be 5 years from now? Are things going to be better or worse? How about quality of work and our position in the marketplace? Thoughts?

QCOM may be around( ?) 5 years from but in a very different in shape and form........wring is clear on the wall. Agree with 114712, I would say QCOM v3.0, v2.0 is alreday in play -:)
More or even all Indies as VPs and high up.
it will be QCOM v2.0 ( or v3.0?)
Smaller, leaner, patent focused, non relevant new product line, the same or more profitable. Many of us will not be around to witness this.
QCOM will be around, the question is whether you want to stick around to be part of it. Will they develop new business opportunities? Well, they have had a dismal track record of that, so its hard to have much confidence there (save QTL and QCT, and Omni that was sold off) the list of winners is short and losers long (BREW, MediaFlow, G* (well, that was supposed to have been cost plus, so maybe not so bad), Telematics, Mirasol, ....). They may be doing better with their Venture funding and that may be one of their winners. What they might try to do is fund more ventures and contract out their own engineering resources to help those firms develop their products that they are backing. This would help retain engineers for the future, engineers could get to work on new stuff (hey management, it sucks to be stuck working on the same damn thing much of your career), and increase the likelihood of success of those ventures funded.
Q will be here in one form or another. Sad to say, most of us won't.
Life cycle of tech is deteriorating at fast pace...it all depends whether qcom can successfully maneuver to better business model..out lofty royalty profits are masking lot of underlying issues,we need to see how things unfold as apple is tightening its grip on whole mobile ecosystem and modem is getting less and less important in mobile phone and qcom getting challenged to be able to extract its share of the pie( not long algo Modem use to be heart of the mobile phone..)...5 Year is a very very long period in our industry.
Hey Dad--whatever happened to QCOM?
Where do I see the Q 5 years from now? As successful as Motorola right now... Oh wait......Sorry, I mean Lenovo....Oh wait, never mind...
A wholly owned subsidiary of Mediatek.
Really good post Anonymous114407 - I agree 1000%
mobile market space is very unforgiving, QC need to act fast else we all know what happened to Nokia, Motorola,BBry, Sony..
Bad things today:
- Bad management, more operating expenses, deteriorating margins, overseas competition, loss of high tier, evaporating middle tier dominance of SS, Sony, LG, etal
Good things for QC today:
- Cash, Licensing business
What will happen now:
- Change in mgmt, spree of acquisitions, reduction in workforce = op-ex reduction, prominent investments in china
Where will QC be In 5 years:
- Licensing business will continue, SOC business will shrink but continue with lesser margins, QC will fourish through one of the acquisitions
Real things to watch out for now:
- What acquisition QC makes, how they handle them, which chinese firms QC invests in and how that is read by Chinese govt
40 lawyers and a fax machine
Q would still be there. It will have more PMs and Indies.
Qualcomm would be there even after 5 years but just one of the chip companies. ..
I see deterioration every year but it'd survive if that's your question
