During the course of my career hunt, there were a lot of good employers that really wanted to hire people with skills they needed, and those were the employers that you really want to spend a lot of time with listening and trying to figure out if it would be a good match for you....And of course there are those "bottom-feeder" employers that all they cared about was filling in the open requisition with the lowest cost person, with quality coming in a distant second...You can usually tell which of the employers are the bottom-feeders, because those are usually the ones the inevitably complain about how "they like you as a candidate", but they "couldn't afford you".....I had a few companies that said just that...And I had a few that even took it further and joked "for the price we pay for you, we can hire 3 fresh grads or 8-10 people in Bangalore." This is where, you have to decide how desperate you are with the job. If you're still employed and aren't in a hurry to leave (which hopefully you are, since hopefully you are smart enough to figure out the best time to look for a job is when you are still employed and not when you are already unemployed), you can come up with a little tongue and cheek....When some of the employers gave me that sort of "for the price we pay you ,we can hire XXXX new grads or YYYY people in bangalore...." during an interview, I would quickly snapped back "well, if that is the case, have you tried hiring those 3-4 new college grads our 10+ people from Bangalore?..If so, how's that working you out for you???" Some of the employers went on to say "well, we aren't able to find qualified people that can do the work..." To which I said, "Well, duh...But by all means, you can go ahead and try...and make a mess of your projects.... like my previous employer did when they tried.... and then after much time and money wasted later.... make the painful decision to hire me to clean up after your big mess...if I'm still available... which chances are I won't be..." And then just smile, with a big grin on your face...meanwhile thinking, there's no way in hell I will work for you, and thank god I have other offers, you shithead....Which brings me to my next point...Never wait until the last minute to look for another job, especially if you think other people will be looking at the same time that you'll need to look....

Shorter: Know the fair market value of your skills in the area where the potential employer is located, plus the cost of living--so you know how much room you have to negotiate if offered founder's stock in a start-up as part of the package. If your employer doesn't want to pay fair compensation for skilled people, at some point you have to question the business judgment of the people running the company. How long do you think the company is going to last trying to put out a product on the cheap?
