Did you ever stop and think that it's all just rumors? Most companies will issue some sort of statement when they lay off a massive amount of people. For example, Exxon, Shell, Baker Hughes, Marathon, and National Oil well all let there employees know beforehand and issued statements to the press.

Yep. They always deny so people won't bail en masse before they're done with them. Some states force layoff warnings, but only layoffs in those states have to be reported in the numbers totals.
What is amazing is having your VP come in and tell you they have no plans for layoffs and then being laid off a month later, but people on here are correct-they tell you your job has been eliminated. They do it very quietly and a few at a time to avoid the press. You do get decent severance but your health insurance is cut off within a day or two of being let go-sucks if you have kids. You will get a call from a supervisor in your department asking you to meet them in a conference room on another floor.
Whoever started this thread obviously does not know Devon. I worked there for 8 years and people were always disappearing due to little mini-reorgs. Usually people that quietly challenged IT management's hair-brained ideas. And recent management changes in certain depts brought in big consulting firm hard-asses. Step on their toes in any way and you're on "the list". Devon has always been as quiet as possible about getting rid of people so they can claim no layoffs. To their credit, they provided decent severance packages but for the long term, you're messed up in this OKC market. Let's hope for a rebound next year.
Sorry you lost your job. Have you been able to find another one since then?
As a previous poster said, the IT director said in a previous meeting when asked if they are considering any layoffs due to the price of oil, and he said "in fact, we are looking to hire". I was laid off before the next monthly IT meeting, I was laid off on Apr 21st 2015.
5 days before the last round of layoffs in April one of the IT directors had a meeting with everyone under him and someone specifically asked if there would be layoffs and everyone was told no there wouldn't be layoffs. The day after the layoff there was a small story in the online business section of news 9 that said Devon laid off people in one department but they wouldn't give any details about it.
Wrong - most companies will continue to deny rumors, tell their employees it's "business as usual" right up to the point they get fired.
