Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

No layoff necessary. Just cut salaries across the board....

...Then you don't need to deal with pink slips and WARN act....People in hot job markets like Bay Area will just quit. (People in san diego will be pissed, but most of them will have to put up with it, since they won't find anything else)....You effectively get that headcount reduction....Or, follow what many tech companies have already done. Get rid of paid vacation, and just make vacation "unlimited" so that vacation based on manager approval of one's request, and no vacation balance accumulation.

@ Anonymous108028 , small correction....Q HR never shrinks. I'm sure only the acquired company suffers any losses due to redundancies. I bet Q HR has never let anybody go. The only thing that could possibly get an HR person in trouble is to side with the employee over management. That's high treason!

We paid huge "retention" bonuses to the executives who failed to keep innovation and moral high in the company and made a ton of bad decisions. They continue the bad policies by borrowing 10 billion dollars to finance stock buyback instead of investing in the company. The buyback helps increase the value of their bonuses

You can always go elsewhere. HR never shrinks. Or just teach community college classes in bitflipping

The way you retain the best is simple. You promote them. So effectively their pay is the same. Only the mediocre ones will effectively get a pay cut. And they will have to take it because they can't go elsewhere

The result will be - best employees will leave immediately and the mediocre ones will remain.

yes, sr staff and below 25% cut. Can't do that for director and above. Need to retain the "best and brightest", much like paying banker bonuses during financial crisis.
