Thread regarding Devon Energy Corp. layoffs

Ben and Lane

You didn't have to work hard to let a handful of us go. Oil prices go up and down. Peoples lives are more important. Did the how many ever IT people you let go impact Devons bottom line?

I hope Karma doesn't find you. You have not only hurt an employee but also hurt his wife, two fledglings kids, and 1000 years of culture.

I cannot forget the work I had in progress that was going to make my customers happy when delivered. If the total money saved by Devon in letting me go was going to help the company, I am fine. If not, hope Karma doesn't find you.

They don't give notice due to possible employee retaliation, access to systems and information, or in case someone goes postal. Tell the people, watch them pack their stuff, walk them to HR, then out the door, change the codes. It's all about security. Heck, I've shown up for work with the "new, friendly company" (that bought us out and talked for two weeks to us face-to-face about their loyalty to us) waiting at the front door to take each person in one by one to pack their stuff and get processed then booted out.

We live in a time where there is no loyalty both ways. Companies take care of you until your needed and employees leave for next best offer. It sucks I got let go as well and during ENABLE gave lots of hours and long nights and Devon gave me a big bonus for it. I worked hard not because I was loyal I knew It would get me a nice bonus. Again sad and pissed to have been let go especially since it was not expected but if I were still there and another company offered me a $15k raise I would be gone in 2 weeks, when it comes to loyalty we have to ask how loyal are we if another company offered us a big raise. Just the day and age we live in

the other response about revenue being the bottom line for a company is right. But Devon puts on a great facade about integrity and community while it does these shock and awe layoffs due to oil prices and tells the media that it is a reorganization.

Also, Ben Williams, the Accenture trust fund baby, telling that we are actually hiring, then laying off employees like a surprise attack, was not necessary. Just tell it like it is so employees can brace for the blow.

All this while they pretend to be employees friends, "wanting to have a beer with us and get to know us rather than be in this meeting". This is Lane's line. Just tell us that layoffs will happen and it will be based on job skills, performance, body odor, etc.

Oh Ben and Lane it's a business not a friendship club. Demand goes down, the job goes with it. There are so many people with families that are in the same position you are. There are never ever any guarantees with a job. You put your time in; they give you a paycheck. You take advantage of any perks offered (insurance, 401K match) etc. and you with below your means to save money because, again, no job is guaranteed. The bottom line of revenue is what propels a company. When revenue shrinks, the number of people required to maintain that revenue will also shrink. Good luck in your job search. We are waiting on the return of oil prices so we can start again. Been doing this for over 30 yrs. We are always preparing for the next downturn.
