Smell That? It's Spring aka 'PIP and Cut' Time Here at Qualcomm

Can you smell it in the air?

It's classic Qualcomm take on Spring Cleaning.

We've taken a standard cost cutting exercise and over complicated / over-engineered it so it now takes 90 days, generally involves a BS process for "improving your performance" and will ultimately result in you being let go anyway. That's right, nobody makes it out of a PIP alive.

But that's not all, we've also over-complicated the assigning of offices through a complex algorithm involving title, tenure and underwear color. So, even filling your old office with a "freshie" will keep HR busy for another 6 - 8 months.

I love this time of year. I get to really use some of most brutal HR tactics and pull out some of my best one-liners. I simply adore starting the discussions with "As you know, Qualcomm is doing some "right-sizing"... It really gets them nodding yes before I break out the dagger.

But, I think one of my favorites is telling a nearly suicidal soon-to-be ex-employee how "everything happens for a reason and this is opening the door to a new opportunity." That one usually gets the tears flowing pretty nicely. Then I collect their badge and give them a flyer for a job fair at the navy shipyard before telling them to get out of my office because "I'm doing one of these every three minutes today and I don't have time for small talk."

I look forward to chatting with you soon.

Empahetically Yours,

Qualcomm HR

Is that the door to the 11th floor balcony in WT??? These people have no respect for property! Their body parts are breaking the glass on the lower balcony when they impact on their way down. No one has yet cleared the lower balconies and make a clean landing. No wonder they were on PIPs. Real under-achievers. You did the right thing Claudia.

Hey, I really like that mini-skirt you're wearing today by the way. Let's get together for another team-building exercise in my office soon.

Not too long time ago, high-tech employee antitrust class-action cost these companies hundreds of millions for settlement...

@100646, I been in HR office a few times to show my H1B renewal every 3 years or so. They don't look like the engineers, HR is probably the WASPiest place in qualcomm second only to the executive team. The ambience there feels like party and people act and talk like being part of a sitcom (too much TV?) They seem to have plenty of free time because I even saw this guy with his guitar handy in a nice stand in his office so inspiration struck, it will be there to sing his lungs out! I walk out feeling it really sucks to be an engineer working long hours in the lab.

How many HR managers does it take to outsource a lightbulb?

Look at roll up numbers under our new HR leader in Ph. 968 employees PLUS 726 temps and consultants. You'll trip on how many VPs there are under her. Anyone seen a Bob consultant yet?

1000 HR is possible. As long as payroll can support it, you can easily justify a 50-man/woman team in organizing special events. It takes a lot time to get balloons and popcorns for 10000 people. Think about how much time you spent on Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. And, you are only hosting 10 people. Special events are a serious production.

Spring cleaning? More like, SM needing millions to pay his outside flunkies to do his dirty work. Talk about CYM at its finest.

1000 HR? Are you sure? I have never seen an HR person the last 15 years except the day I joined and signed my papers. How do they look like? are they from the same planet as engineers? If I happen to be at HR department do people look like me? Do they have pink dots in their badges?

HR is truly valued more than engineers. Shouldn't the power-trip be compensation enough, with their crackerjack box degrees and all. Still 1000 rollups to HR head?

@100474, is been a blessing working @ da Q for the last 15 years. Since I learned the meaning of the word frugality early enough I am ready to get the boot and look forward for my severance pay to take a once in a lifetime chance to travel the world (in a frugal fashion of course) while I am still young. As far as why I read this blog is because is SO entertaining! All listen, is never to late to learn how to live within your means, think twice before splurging your fat bonus in that European car which is the de facto standard among QCT. VEST & INVEST if your are a hard working engineer but if you are lucky enough to climb the corporate ladder just simple Rest & Vest, right SM?

Optimist@daQ - Interesting coping technique. It would seem as though you are secure in your RSUs (even though the vesting might not happen before you get the boot) your promotion prosposect which have gotten increasingly scarce in the past 5 years, your bonus and your Q career longevity prospects. All of that is charming. Only question is, with everything looking so rosy, why are you checking in to the Qualcomm page on www.thelayoff.com? Hmmm. Maybe not so secure after all.
