Thread regarding Devon Energy Corp. layoffs

Being laid off is tougher than anticipated...

Even with the 'dignity' that Devon laid me off from my IT role, it feels terrible. It is not as terrible as losing a loved one, and my health is intact, but it is its own beast.

Other than being prepared for a layoff financially, there is no way I could've been emotionally prepared. Kids see their parents cry loudly, and ask what is going on.

It is hard, and one has to move on, but it leaves a scar.

Please don't be emotionally wedded to your job at Devon. Devon may promote the perception of integrity, family first, community first, but it really cannot be different from other companies in this regard. The sudden layoff inspite of reassurances is like reaching out for a handshake but getting sucker punched.

Oil and Gas company management seem to lose their sense of moral integrity the minute they accept a promotion into the level of a Lead or Supervisor. These companies are fake and wait until the surveys for the "Best Company to Work" for passes then their true colors come out. Funny how those surveys work. Who is filling out that information anyway? Surely not the employees. Employees are screened by performance but why aren't the supervisors? There are some sorry small minded people in those positions and do not deserve to be there. It takes an act of murder and embarrassment to Devon before any changes are made. The staff at Devon work hard long and stressful hours and management has turned a blind and glazed over eye to that fact. Maybe there should be a strike in great numbers and take to the streets to get managements attention? Surely they won't fire everyone. Make the unfairness public to force a change people!

You suggested that people not be emotionally wedded to their jobs at DEVON. I would suggest that you not be emotionally wedded to your jobs anywhere!! EVERY company tries to promote a culture of fairness, honesty, trust, family values....all that. The reality is that those are kool-aid words used to gain your loyalty. Do not drink the kool-aid!

Yes, it wasnt related to cash flow. 50-100 employees let go won't make a dent in a multi billion dollar company. It could've been a strategic direction the IT department is going in.

I am so sorry for your pain. What Devon did and how they did it was so wrong. Even the government has learned a better way. Offer an early buy out, have a hiring freeze. Let the people move to other positions. Devon is nothing more than a typical evil oil company out for the buck. They don't care about their people or community. They are a fake. My hope now is that Devon goes down or is bought. Nobody in IT is safe. The plan from IT management is to out source all of IT to the 3rd world. Yes they need jobs, but so do the people in America. IT management doesn't care about anyone but themselves. Take the SAP staff that got let got. Now Devon will hire contractors. The quality of service and dependability will be horrible. IT will erode and each department will have to hire vendors to be their IT staff. Those that were in the first wave will be lucky to find the better jobs. Those of us left go to work every day waiting for the other shoe to drop and the beating to begin. We say the wrong thing or take the wrong job we could be out. All I can say for those left it is a different kind of torment and hell. Nobody wins and what makes it worse it when management tells us that it wasn't related to cash flow. This means that the horrible IT management gets to keep their jobs for managing resource poorly the last 5 years and kick the hard working staff to the curb. Devon why don't you hire an IT CIO that knows how to run an IT department for an oil company. Devon's problems runs deep with the IT management starting at the top. Ben Williams is weak and doesn't have a clue about people or teams. BTW how many supervisors do you need anyway? It seems to be about a one to three ratio.
