Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

I have been told that if I took a leave of absence, when/if the school closes that I would NOT be able to qualify for "debt forgiveness".

This doesn't seem logical to me. Yet, I continue with current enrollment, (racking up more debt), for the simple fact that I can't afford the debt of a school I can't use to gain elopement.

There's a current offer from Cal Grant that says students may transfer their Cal Grant to a regular collage if they want to leave Heald. Sounds nice except students are being told they must stay "active" to qualify for debt forgiveness. You just want to pull your hair out.

LOA is still an active status per federal regs. That is why there is no withdrawal calculation done when you go on LOA. If you don't return on the scheduled return date you become a withdrawn student.

Personally, I wouldn't listen to any employee of Heald regarding any of this mess. They have lied and they will continue to lie. I encourage you to keep researching and make the best decision for you.

I'm protesting with a group fighting the debt.

There's 2 options:

1) Defense to Repayment cause: on your FAFSFA app there is a clause. It says if you're school broke state law your federal loans can be written off. THe DOE is currently working on a "process" to help make that happen for Corinthian College students. You can fill out an online form here:

2) Debt Strike: If you are in default, unable to pay, not going to pay, or have other modifications paying $0 and bad credit you might want to consider the strike.

If you want more info, let me know. I want to help as many students as I can...

You don't have to stay active, but to qualify for forgiveness, the school must close within a relatively short and specific time after you are no longer active.

Yeah file the defense to repayment and make sure to list all the unethical things they are doing. That is part of their plan too, once you start you already owe hundreds a month and even if you finish a degree often has no value in the entry level job market. The more desperate they get the more funny it is to laugh at them and the inevitable bankruptcy and shutdown coming.

They just want you to stay enrolled so that they can continue to get money. The school is getting desperate.
