Thread regarding Devon Energy Corp. layoffs

Devon could learn from Sandridge Energy

At least they did it with integrity, communicated to the local media and asked their employees to reach out to those who lost their job and see how they could help. different culture.

When you have no integrity, you put a plaque in the floor with the word so it is there!

Any way you spin it, what they did is wrong. They promise no layoffs every. What a crock. They got rid of people with 10 years of service and kept interns. Does that make since. Of course not. They the ugly oil company with no ethics or integrity. They are like all of corporate America, rotten to the core. The top tier rule while putting it to the working man. Shameful

We know, this is corporate America and not a charity organization and it has to cut costs. But Devon IT could have been honest when asked and informed that they were planning staff reductions. This would reduce or eliminate the shock and disbelief. What has Devon IT gained by shocking its employees?

I am one of those laid off and was treated with respect by everyone. It's one of those things that must be done and hard decisions were made - the shareholders rule. I'm sure individual areas handled it differently, but my experience was not degrading in any way. Also, HR has been very helpful and responsive with my questions since the layoff. Sure, it's a scary thing to be out of a job now and some anger (believe me I had some) and confusion is normal. But this is corporate America. Devon is no different than any other company that must make difficult choices. I would like to think I still had something to offer the company in some other capacity but just not in the cards this time. Keep your heads up, move on as quickly as possible, and don't get into the "why me" zone. I truly wish everyone the best whether still at Devon or recently let go. Stay positive, believe good things can still happen, and don't redefine yourselves over this.

I know some people are emotional but the truth is always somewhere in the middle. I am currently at Devon IT, now there were people let go no doubt but I dont think it is as widepsread as these posts would lead you to believe.

The last poster has it correct. Remaining employees were encouraged to continue friendships and professional relationships.

I heard from an IT person still at Devon that the CIO had a conference call on Tuesday to the remaining IT staff. It was brief but included that it was OK to reach out to those no longer at Devon.

Devon and other companies hold it against you if you do not give them at least a month's notice when leaving. Guess they don't think telling people they will be fired until the day they are fired though is acceptable. I expect Devon will now being using a lot more contract employees who they can rape by not paying them anything or any benefits. You cannot treat people like animals and expect them not act accordingly.

Shrek's point was that while both Devon and Sandridge had to lay people off, Sandridge did it above the board, letting the media know and cultivating a community, whether someone's an employee or an ex-employee. Devon outright told the media there were no layoffs (due to the shady practice of calling repeated layoffs "reorgs" instead), and, per reports from current employees on this site, instructed employees that were not terminated to not communicate with those laid off. If that is indeed the case, then Sandridge is the company with true integrity, while Devon needs a plaque in the rotunda to show it off as lip service, seeing as how they don't behave with it.

LOL

You are kidding, right?

People who have worked for years and then got unceremoniusly dumped with nothing to show for it.

So much for being one of the top 100 places to worl.
