Thread regarding HP (Hewlett-Packard) layoffs

I just found out today that WFR is back in force! Two good friends of mine - who are very good workers - are on the list. So are others.

I am a mid-level employee. I joined EDS in July 2001, and was an EDS employee when HP acquired EDS in summer 2008. So, I am now with HP Enterprise Services.

As explained to us in summer 2008, there were cost efficiencies (headcount reductions) when combining the two companies. That made sense. They no longer needed 2 HR offices, 2 finance offices, 2 legal offices, etc. The same rationale for headcount reductions was used when HP acquired 3COM in 2009, Palm in 2010, and of course Autonomy in 2011.

Now that we are dividing from 1 into 2 companies, the rationale used in these prior acquisitions would lead you to think we should be adding more employees now. Instead we're told that splitting from 1 company into 2 will again lead to more headcount reductions?

We're confused. We're only computer engineers, after all.

Making some of the worst leadership decisions i've seen in years.... Rather than getting rid of middle management lets fire our services employees, and rehire them back as contractors to make our books look better... Idiotic really... Rather than fix the problem lets just fire all of our workers and hope they take this job offer from CIBER... IF they don't, oh well. Never mind about moral... Let's see, fire an employee of say 20 or 30 years, but rather than giving you your severance package were going to get some OTHER company to hire you at a cheaper wage, with no vacation, and you can do the same job at HP again.... and that's going to work well for you HP? that's going to make employees want to work well? REALLY? WTF were you thinking.... Good luck with that HP.... IDIOTS.

RE this - Folks were notified in last month they were being laid off with final date being in October. They are being asked to looked for other jobs, but the actual date is unknown and theres unlike past Layoffs- NO SEVERANCE.

So you are saying all those being laid off between now and 10/31 have been told? And nobody is receiving severance?

There were far better employees laid off before me, far worse laid off after, both good and bad remain but the calculus of that logic seems to be simple math, (we need this much money, RIF till we hit that number). They produce fewer and fewer products, so their income model is based upon acquiring company's for their contracts and discarding the costs that come along with those contracts, the people. If they can't dump those that come directly with the newly acquired company due to corporate memory needs, they have to cut somewhere, typically from the last acquired company hoping that knowledge has been absorbed. This cycle runs in 4, 8 and 12 to 15 year cycles, so if your company was absorbed and you remained, every new company acquired, ticks the clock closer to your previous company's turn on the bleeding edge of the RIF engine. They cycle through each previously acquired entity, as needed.

The RIF engine at HP, as with most large IT firms, runs non-stop, what most don't realize is HP tends to jump on the latest IT fad about 2 years behind everyone else. So with IBM and other mega IT corps riffing 4 to 1 heads offshore, you can expect that trend to dawn upon HP around mid to late 2016, but only after they've cut til they cause SLA impact stateside. If you're a stateside HP employee, and can stick it out for a year or two more, you may have a front row seat for the offshore bloodletting that's about to take place.

But good ole Meg likes to talk ethics. Have everyone work from home sell off the space then say back into office no more teleworkers.

Yes it is happening, I am one to be whacked in Canada before formal HP separation date. We are just number, they don't care if you are best at your job.

The layoffs are in progress now. Remote workers (teleworkers) are being let go first. Those who have been with EDS/HP for a long time are also being cut. HP says teleworkers need to go into an office but the problem is that HP closed many offices a few years ago so there is nowhere to return to. Workers in NY are also some of the first to go. One team was composed of 85% teleworkers. Within the last week they have lost 35% of the team. It is fully expected the rest of the teleworkers including the manager to be let go. There is no lower management input involved with most of these layoffs. This will prove interesting as this will bring the large NMCI account to its knees by removing some of the key people who keep these systems running. Navy beware........

Meg had better sell HPe soon as things, short term, will look good, but down the road things will get very bumpy. I view this round of layoffs as short term corporate greed.

So when does this list start getting executed?

RE — Long time HP employee - going through it again......

When you say the friends of yours are on the list - does that mean they are still employed, but will be whacked? Are they aware they are on the list? Please elaborate, if possible on time frames etc. I heard a month or so back about some list of those getting cut, so wasn't sure if it was a rumor or not. Have not seen any cuts in my specific ES area, but they are probably on the way.

HP is getting lean and mean before split so their earnings for both companies look decent going forward.
