Thread regarding Heald College layoffs

A few years ago, a dream started to take shape.

I want to take everyone back a few years to an experience many of us have had, an experience that never fails to impress itself upon us deeply. I led a young applicant into a gleaming building full of technology, vibrant discussion, committed faculty, and forward-looking students. We moved from room to room, and I could see the young man's eyes growing wider, almost as if he couldn't believe that the possibilities, these possibilities, were for him. You see, he didn't have the "silver spoon" background. He was still struggling with the basics that many elite students, their hands held throughout their academic lives, take for granted. He knew one thing: this was going to be the start of something big. He turned to me and asked, "Is this heaven?" "No," I replied, "This is Heald."

I don't now where this student and thousands of others like him are today, but I like to think they are still dreaming and still achieving with the lifelong tools we gave them. 150 years and still going strong.

Look at what some of the innovators are doing with education online. There is a great opportunity for someone to step in, provide some sort of funding to go non-profit, and then leverage what Heald has. This won't be some corporate shuffle, but a remaking of education online. CamdenKid is on the right track.

Or at least that Heald is no longer what this dreamer thinks it is.

Interesting how no positive comments came out from this post. What does that tell you.... Heald is no longer.

If this story is true, and you have a large enough core group, I think someone should consider a worker-centered, student-centered coop. Cut out the banks for capital and get the community behind you.

I understand why some die-hards keep defending Heald. It used to be an acceptable school. I have taught at Heald for 14 years and have watched the steady decline. Yes, we used to have much stricter guidelines, but that all went away when CCi bought us. I am so tired of people talking about Heald like it is a glorious institution above the rest. I am constantly coerced into passing students who have no educational skills to be in college in the first place. Stop defending what we were. Take responsibility for what we are.

Are you still with Heald or did you go back to selling used cars?

@263. Just piss off with that. 2-3 years ago, yea, that crap might have been less laughable, but at this point it's just sad and insulting. Please, join the tea party: You can hang out with people even stupider and less honest than you are.

I don't know why you keep bringing up places like Princeton. Heald doesn't compare to other career colleges. Kids buy into a dream and are sold a nightmare.

It was no campus in the present, probably the Heald of 10-15 years ago. Heald currently is helping the disadvantaged. It is taking advantage of them.

I have seen complaints about the elitist attacks on Heald and I they are continuing. I would have loved to have gone to Princeton or USC. The reality was that I could not afford it, and they also catered to wealthy legacy applicants. Heald is less strict in admissions policies, but boy does that make a difference when some eager kid, or aspiring senior wants a shot at the American Dream. If the government wants to take that away, then maybe I am on the side of the Tea Party.

Tell us where this student is now and how much debt he's accumulated from his heaven-like experience at Heald.

Hand holding is all that Heald does. Your story is flawed.

Poor kid. You sold him on the promise of a good education, up-to-date tools, and a chance to get ahead for a price that only silver spoons could afford. Instead, he ended up at Heald.
