I want to take everyone back a few years to an experience many of us have had, an experience that never fails to impress itself upon us deeply. I led a young applicant into a gleaming building full of technology, vibrant discussion, committed faculty, and forward-looking students. We moved from room to room, and I could see the young man's eyes growing wider, almost as if he couldn't believe that the possibilities, these possibilities, were for him. You see, he didn't have the "silver spoon" background. He was still struggling with the basics that many elite students, their hands held throughout their academic lives, take for granted. He knew one thing: this was going to be the start of something big. He turned to me and asked, "Is this heaven?" "No," I replied, "This is Heald."
I don't now where this student and thousands of others like him are today, but I like to think they are still dreaming and still achieving with the lifelong tools we gave them. 150 years and still going strong.
