The Madness of Tina, Michael, and Anna ... or, How to Destroy a Good School in Matter of Weeks

I have been with the college for a long, long time. I am saddened by the complete disrespect that the school has shown the faculty. I too was let go. 5+ years with the company, and I was told without warning that I was being let go in ONE day.

NO warning … NO courtesy … and a SCRIPTED read response.

I remember the good days at the college…back when STUDENTS mattered, not COMPLIANCE REPORTS or NUMBERS.

When faculty can actually TEACH students, not be STUDENT SERVICES.

Here is my take on the current status of things:

Michael Pierce:

I’m sure Michael is a nice guy, but I’ve never seen a more incompetent dean in my life. His decisions and focus are downright horrendous and reflect an emphasis on metrics that don’t work instead of actual student outreach. According to Anna Lindemann, he is a total control freak who basically asks that same STUPID questions every meeting with her (why is XYZ on this report? Because it is Tuesday, dumb ass and they did their outreach on MONDAY!) He only has an M.Ed., and previous experience before being a Dean was a Technology Instructor and Director of Student Services at Everest (it is no wonder he is trying to make Faculty into Student Services). Even his Linkedin focuses not on coordinating students, but on Microsoft Office and SmartBoards. And this is the Dean for the entire online division?!

Anna Lindemann:

One word … micro-manager. It is funny … when people claim constantly they aren’t a micro-manager, it usually means they are. And Anna is the poster-child for this. She can speak for 30 min without breathing, and can tell you the same stories for weeks on end like you’ve never heard them before. She will say things like “Hope springs eternal” 50x in one meeting. She is obsessed with staying off reports with no regard to students or faculty. And despite saying she sticks by her faculty, this whole incident proves that she does not. Unfortunately, her emphasis is not based on academic research, but is more a “Yes” woman to Pierce’s poor non-research based approach to education.

SOS (Suck Our Souls):

Daily meetings to talk about the same crap of staying off reports? WASTE of time. And especially the way Anna does the meetings. It ends up being “Anna’s story time” while she rants about how she was picked on by people, how she stands behind her faculty, how she is for the students although it is really about the numbers, and “Hope Springs Eternal.”

Talisma:

Supposedly the school spent millions of dollars on this program. Who was the stupid idiot that made that decision?! Talisma is a CUSTOMER SERVICE platform, NOT a school based system. In essence, faculty became Student Services and used this stupid program to track it all? What ends up happening is students are getting harassed by teachers contacting them constantly. They could have invested in something to highlight at-risk students, but instead use this crazy non-sense to track/harass students.

Non-research based:

The emphasis on student-outreach is non-researched based and ignorant. It is harassing to students. I know someone who analyzed student responses, and this was a major theme … that students felt like the school was no different than “bill collectors”. What did Tina do with this info? What did Michael do with it? Ignore it.

Despite the saying that layoffs were based on longevity and performance, this obviously did not happen. I know certain class types in which ALL the instructors were let go … people who were QUALIFIED to teach them. Who replaced them? Ph.D.’s IN the field replaced by B.A. and M.A.’s OUTSIDE the field.

It is a very sad time for a college I once loved and believed in. What used to be one of the better online colleges now has become the worst one I’ve ever known.

And I felt this way BEFORE the layoffs.

I think ultimately, they are either going to do away with the online division, or force any remaining faculty to be “on campus” employees or lose their jobs.

The weirdest thing about these layoffs … why on earth lay off adjuncts?! I mean … just don’t give them classes! Why lay them off? And why not give the full time faculty a chance to go part-time, or move back to adjunct status?!

Just madness ...

Anonymous90772, I am the OP above, and your post was great.

I am proud of what we did. We helped a LOT of students and made a difference. We changed up classes and made them better ... stronger.

We believed in what we did.

And I leave knowing that I did things that made a difference. Just because Michael and Anna had their own agenda, I realize that they are NOT "Everest".

I recall when we went through troubled times before and Deans actually went without salary to keep faculty positions safe. Those days are gone now.

The move to Zenith made the now "Everest" lose its soul and identity.

But there are those of us who remember how it was ... how we made a difference ... how at one time I would have put Everest up against ANY online school out there.

Those days were magic, and the Zenith corruption can never take that away from us ...

I have been reading several of these postings on here about the recent layoffs and besides the few that are just ridiculous and out in left field, it really shows how classy and professional these instructors are that were downsized. I see a lot of well thought out postings, nothing really offensive or off the mark (again, I noted "a few" above to ignore) and what really makes me smile, is I can tell who wrote some of these because of the way they are written. It makes me smile, I can hear that person's voice in my head and I just remember when it was still good. :-)

I agree it sucks but in the end, I am relieved as well that it is finally over. I left with my head held high and with my integrity intact because I wouldn't change grades or fluff my awarded points on assignments. I also just found out that one of the students I recommended to the Student Ambassador group, got in and is now an official Ambassador trainee (there is a lot more to this story but trust me when I say it was a close call as to whether he continued or decided stripes were a good look for him). I couldn't be prouder of him if I tried! :-) That right there made it worth it... I left making a difference. And I know so many more of you did the same because when I made those flippin' calls EVERY OTHER DAY, I would always get through to a few of them and they would tell me about how their other instructors were helping them, etc. I always asked if they emailed those people to let them know how they felt about that help and they would often say "no". Please know, if you feel like you didn't make a difference, know that you probably did.

Thank you for always being amazing professionals and for just being the classiest people I have ever had the honor of working with. I may not be proud of my higher, higher ups, but I am proud of my co-workers and and know that wherever you land, that company will be getting a valuable and loyal employee. :-)

Good point about being allowed to go back to part time. I was told that part timers were let go as well so there was no possibility of obtaining any part time work. This ship has truly sailed.

Probably the best post I've ever read on this or Everest Layoff board. This school needs to get away from having adjuncts calling students. IT'S NOT OUR JOB and shouldn't be. Hire a few student service employees to call all of them. I hope it heads that way.

Thanks for the overview. I especially liked the SOS (Suck Our Souls) term. I felt this way on every SOS call I was involved in. It was all about the numbers and what are instructors doing for outreach. Many times I was told, "Call them again." Yes, because I'm sure students are just waiting on the edge of their seat to get calls from their four instructors, a PL, and someone in student services from week to week.

Yes, I remember the time when CCI was about helping students and not micro-managing instructors. A few years ago they started micro-managing instructors and it just got worse and worse. Now it's just a cesspool of sickos. I'm actually relieved that I was let go.

Sure this is a hard time for you. I know, having worked at EUO for over six years, the company has steadily gone down hill as you've stated. The "golden years" we right after the 2008 stock market crash, which sent many back to school, thus employing many of us. Unfortunately, management didn't figure how to parlay that growth and now we're here. It sucks. It really does. But, honestly, it can be for the better. I know I've prepared months ago given the ever present axe above our collective heads. Hope you find something soon and more fulfilling.
