On Monday, Everest Online is going to announce a major layoff of full time teaching employees. They are going to lay off most of the full timers and replace them with the adjunct staff. They are sending out announcements to the adjuncts, even those in active, that they will be offered courses for the spring term. Many full time teachers will be terminated, not reduced to adjuncts.

Got the call last Friday from Mr. Conaty explaining low student enrollment was the reason for the layoffs. It should be no shock to any of us that this day would come. They eliminated all of the CJ and Homeland Security associate programs late last year. No new student enrollment in these programs because many students could not get past the background checks. They said it would be a two-year out of the program. The two week severance package sucks. Basically, they don't pay out your sick time or unused vacation so in essence the severance pay is money they owe you in unused time off. What a bullshit way to make you think they are doing you a favor.
I had a class that started with 32 students and at the end - only 1 passed the course. I was not terminated and have spring term classes.
Don't worry about starts they aren't important. Well, it looks like they are real important you F$&@ moron! Hawn is such a buffoon!
Not to rub it in. But I have taught online for 9 years and just got more classes than I usually get. It appears to me that they are consolidating Adjuncts to teach more courses. Business wise that is sound practice. I wish they could have done this before the switch, it would have been a better method and easier to swallow. Sorry for all the folks that got released. I hope you all get jobs and things work out. I just posted so you have all the facts. They had way too many PD's and PL's for a sound business model. It's almost going back to when I started. Now they just need to get adjuncts away from retention work to focus on teaching and they will have a better system.
Yes, I got the boot after 5 years teaching business math and college algebra
@576 @566.....
You're right that there is almost no basis for a lawsuit for an at-will employee. The only time there is if the termination was done in violation of Title VII (i.e. some sort of unlawful discrimination), and there is no evidence of that at the moment.
I got the call this morning and so did a lot of other adjuncts. I don't think they are going to an all adjunct work force.
566 - What would be the basis of a lawsuit? Most states are at-will employment. Unless you can show that you were terminated based on protected status (age, race, gender, religion, etc), or that you had an employment contract that was violated, you have no case. You can be let go at any time, for any (non-illegal) reason. Most attorneys will not take such a case on contingency because the chances of winning are minimal. Save your money for a new interview suit of clothes.....
Anyone not taking the severance and thinking about wrongful termination suit?
To provide you all with as much insight information as I have at this moment related to online jobs, here it is: There were approximately 100 full time faculty and Program Leads who received the RIF calls this morning from Patricia Jones (current inexperienced Business Dean in Tampa for online). She read a scripted message and did not deter from the message unless caught off guard with an interruption or a question, to which here response was a canned, "Ask HR".
There are still a few full time faculty and Program leads left in the Online program and they are still there either because they have valid law suits pending (which the company would lose if they were terminated), or they are inexperienced, or compromising of values/ethics/legalities.
There have been "secret evaluations" of all faculty going on by PLs for the past several months. When we as PLs asked if these results were shared with faculty, we were told they were, however, there was a message sent out by Shana Massimino saying explicitly "do not share these evaluations with the faculty". Sound a bit unethical or maybe illegal? Those of use who asked these questions, showed up on the RIF list today....could this be a form of retaliation....maybe so.
I'd be willing to begin an HR inquiry via EEOC or similar governmental entity or investigative reporter if anyone would like to join in this endeavor as we all look for new jobs.
Let's not let these unethical illegal leaders continue to hurt more employees, students, and taxpayers, as they think they are immune to the law!
I got a call today about being laid-off. Full-time online instructor. Was told the criteria was based on years of service and performance. Also, was informed there is "severance" although I have no idea what that would be. I am still waiting on the email from HR. Of course, no offer for transferring to adjunct status even after asking.
Very professional, not. What more can you expect from the same leadership that was at Everest? If anyone wants a leadership lesson on what NOT TO DO just use Everest leadership as a case study. I'm sure it will be in many business courses and MBA programs in the future.
I am a newer adjunct who was called this morning to say my services were no longer needed.
I also got lay off call from the dean. It sucks but what can we do.
Anyone know if Anna Lindemann was laid off too?
I was let go even after I was given classes. I was a full timer who taught online. Was with the company more than 6 years and got a crappy servance -- less than a month's pay.
I was an adjunct for EUO for 12 years and was laid off today. Good riddance.
What department?
Many Program Leads were let go this morning - myself and 4 of my coworkers so far...
Lets get rid of those who say this is not true. I am sure it is a dean at Everest like Dean Pierce or maybe the facebook guy James Nemieth. Need more proof this is true? Maybe Ashley the Program Director. She is a real piece of work for sure.
Deans are calling Everest online instructors and laying them off one after another. This information that is reported here is true. The stupid college is just chucking out people who spent years teaching for them like dirt.
I got a call this morning letting me know I was terminated. I was an adjunct for EUO and haven't taught a course since last summer (I declined courses for a couple of semesters). I never completed the paper work for ECMC/Zenith, so I thought I was already let go.
For those of you who are looking for new work teaching online, I applied for about 60 positions (most part time) and received offers for from 7 of them. I now have more work than I need, all at fully-accredited non-profit schools.
ThIs is true. Was called this morning and fired after several years FT.
@417, BS. Who do you expect to believe that crap. You come to post here before checking your email? Try harder next time.
WOW! I just got a phone call and was told due to low enrollment I was terminated. I was a full time employee online and I am shocked. Before I could ask if I could work part time, they hung up. Going to see if I can still access my email.
I'm full-time and classes showed up in eCollege for me late this afternoon.
The Everest Online Spring Classes loaded on Thursday around 6PM. If you have a class or two, then you are still hired. If you have no classes, then you are toast. This is only to the full timers so if you are reporting you have classes, please tell us if you are full timer or adjunct.
For those who have two, can you say MINIs and forget these naysayers
I'm full time and I have two courses.
Yes, I am full time.
Are you full time?
I HAVE CLASSES SHOWING UP AND I AM FACULTY!
I have classes showing up and am I faculty.
This is no lie. The truth will be shown on Monday. Some will have work but many will not.
I only have some courses. Anyone else?
Classes already appearing in ecollege, folks don't listen to the lies!
Blood pressure in check. Let Monday be the day when see the real truth as we suspect it will be unfold itself. We all knew this day would come with the huge drop in enrollment. Tomorrow, we will see the first sign of no courses showing up, Saturday will be the same I suspect. Maybe by Sunday late they will show or maybe not. Those remaining will be scrambling on Monday to set up the courses for sure. Others, will be in shock! I am sure some program leads will also feel the knife as well. We all knew this day would come and here it comes, Spring Term!
Just to raise your blood pressure a bit. Wonder why we do this to each other.
Why wait until Monday?
What are the odds we'll get severance pay? Also, anyone know what departments will be hit the most?
What about program leads?
