Does anyone know the difference between a voluntary lay off/early retirement and a straight lay off? Does anyone have any information regarding employee reduction due to the F-22 program closing in Palmdale, CA.

I heard that employees could be given a reduction in force lay off notice and collect unemployment but they volunteered for the package ahead of time. Is this true?

What form of communication is used to offer the VRP (letter, email, off the record talks)?
Typically the terms are much more generous for the voluntary folks (VRP) - they also know well in advance how the package will look, Lockheed typically sweetens the deal with extra money, extra weeks of pay, extra benefits coverage, etc.
