7/22 Via The Star Ledger: Continental Airlines has sent notices to ~300 pilots telling them they may be laid off as part of a plan announced Tuesday to trim the carrier's overall workforce by 1,700 this year, the pilots union communicated. Continental, a Houston-based airline let the Air Line Pilots Association know late Tuesday the notifications will be sent to comply with a New Jersey state law that requires workers be notified of layoffs at least sixty days before they take place. Airlines employed ~7pc fewer workers in May than they did in May 2008, according to the latest statistics from the Dpt of Transportation, and many carriers continue to cut staff and flights in response to slack demand.
