The saga continues, this time via WCPO: CINCINNATI -- A local union is unhappy about the recent city layoffs, and its members are voicing their complaints.
Local officials with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, or AFSCME, say 31 members were among the nearly 300 City of Cincinnati employees who lost their jobs in Friday's layoffs.
In addition, 41 other members were moved to different departments. The changes come as part of an effort to close a $28 million gap in the city budget resulting from sharply falling tax revenues.
The union is upset because there are part-time employees still working for the city. Union officials say those jobs should have been the first to be cut.
AFSCME also believes its members should be able to transfer to other city positions, including those currently held by non-union members.
The group is working on an official grievance and is expected to file it Tuesday morning. The group is also considering joining a lawsuit against the city. The Cincinnati Organized and Dedicated Employees union (CODE) and the FOP filed that lawsuit to stop the layoffs, saying the city's budget deficit isn't nearly as bad as the city manager has made it out to be.
