Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

What’s the point?

I work in finance. Regularly, people present wrong data in an inconsistent format. There’s numerous overlaps too, where multiple teams do the same reports in a slightly different format.

How do people present wrong data with such confidence? I am puzzled

I can look up the same data in 3 different tools and get 3 different results.

In my opinion, I am seeing there are too much focus and too many backend teams working on excel spreadsheet and crunching and predicting numbers. Often rely on the same data and presenting a different reports for the management. These people has virtually no idea on what the business is all about. They often rely on the field people to give them insights to provide a report and answer to their management. In my opinion, it is a much waste of resources.

I present unvetted or massaged data all the time.
No one knows the data better than the presenter and no one actually cares.

My results are my results. Your results are your results. Let’s all get off this call sooner so we can get back to real work.

Figures in SFDC are pulled from thin air also.
Which means projected sales numbers are complete BS
No wonder we are in the situation we are in.

Everywhere I've worked inside Dell the figures are massaged to make everyone look good. It's a two way street. They massage Tell Dell to gaslight people into believing that everything is fantastic and ignore the red flags so shouldn't be shocked when it's fed back to them like this too.

Dell has been Excel driven since its inception and getting accurate and consistent data has always been an issue. People present with such confidence because they actually believe what they are presenting is true and further, they know that nobody can prove them wrong. I, too, worked in Finance and quickly learned to do the best I could with the data I had and present with absolute confidence. Dell is like sharks in the water if a presenter shows signs of weakness.

Maybe we shouldn’t use excel and PowerPoint anymore and pretend it’s 2025 and not 1996
