I used to work as both an OEM and a supplier for said OEM. Apple was always the talk of the town because when you all "divorced" Intel, there was heavy speculation that you all would eventually just replace every hardware component with something proprietary. It's a good idea on paper because there's more control on hardware performance but how much money is really being saved here? I can imagine the amount of time and effort that goes into choosing a fabless company to partner with and the foundry company to make the actual parts. That program manager for that must have the patience of a saint.
