For those laid off in the past, after receiving your lump sum severance payment, how long did you have to wait to start collecting unemployment benefits?

NC you can't collect until your weeks of severance is gone. Example if you were paid 10 weeks you can't collect until after the 10 weeks.
I waited for about a month, but then benefits backdated from the government itself, so could have claimed it immediately
In MN as soon as you sign the agreement, you are supposed to notify unemployment. This is because your agreement and severance backpays you for time you claimed on your unemployment. So it is basically double payment for the same period. Additionally a reason your severance might be delayed is because Under laws like the Older Workers Benefit Protection Act (OWBPA) in the U.S., employees who are over the age of 40 and being laid off may be entitled to a waiting period of up to 21 days (or even longer in group layoffs) to consider the severance agreement. Employers often wait for this period to lapse before processing any severance payment, to ensure that the employee has had adequate time to review and has voluntarily signed the agreement.
Immediately in Texas.
It varies by state. SC you can start collecting immediately. TX has different laws and they cannot. You can search in the internet for your state’s requirements.
seriously--check with Google. "[state name] unemployment severance" I'm in MN and I've been claiming UI because my severance hasn't come through and it's almost 2 months since I was laid off. in MN, it asks, "did you get any money that we don't know about this week?" I answer 'no' because it hasn't arrived, so I qualify for UI.
