Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Fake Intel LinkedIn profiles?

I work at Intel and received several LinkedIn connection requests from people indicating they were also at Intel. I never worked with any of them and they weren't in the email directory.

I responded to one asking what's up and are you fake? He responded saying that he used to be Intel but won't update his profile until he has a new job. Then 5 minutes later his profile competely disappeared!

What's the deal? Why would people make fake LinkedIn profiles?

Some of you are weirdly paranoid. LinkedIn will often recommend connections to people based on who you are already connected with and what keywords/interests are in your profile. I often get requests to connect with people I don't know. LinkedIn thinks I might know them, but I have a policy of not pressing the button unless I do. OP and several responses thinks it's a scam or something, but in most cases, it's just someone trying to build their profile count.

I also know several people who once worked at Intel. Some of them have been unemployed for a very long time and don't update their profile because how is it going to look when a prospective employer sees "Unemployed" for months/years?

I really don't understand the outward paranoia here. Just decline the invite like a normal person would.

When someone leaves they remain in the directory for some period of time, with the status as unknown (or something like that), so that is an easy check.

Besides, why connect to a stranger? Why be clicking on external email links, from any device?

It is a common scam at Facebook, some strangers ask to add you as contact, then chat with you to try to start an online romance or friendship. Goal is to get you to invest in some fake sites, or other ways to get your money once trust has been established. Guess these scammers now move to Linkedin.
