Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Performance rating of 2

How bad is performance rating of 2 in my first year at Qualcomm. Should I brush up my resume?

I had a rating of 3 always and it never went up or down. But they laid me off for no reason. Not even performance they said.

Depends on when you joined in the year and assignments. In toxic team, can be a recipe for layoff.

HR forces ratings to a curve. Managers are required to assign 2 to a minimum percentage of their team regardless of their performance. Managers are therefore incentivized to make sure they have some low performers to give low ratings to and to layoff when the time comes.

As a former Qualcomm employee (senior staff engineer/manager) it really depends on the group. Some groups won't give you much your first review out so it may not be unusual in your group to get a 2 for your first review.

A couple of things to consider:

  1. What kind of feedback did you get? Were you given constructive criticism and suggestions/coaching on how to improve (which should go into every review but it doesn't always happen)/ If so, take heed... if it's reasonable. If you didn't get any useful feedback or the feedback is to do something that is practically impossible (which also happens) then start looking around.
  1. Take a good honest look at your performance and the performance of your peers. You have a gut feeling for how you did... getting tasks done on time or ahead of schedule, creating clever solutions that helped the team, taking longer than you (and your lead) thought to get something done etc... You should also have a gut feeling for how your peers did. Is there a slacker out there? is there an all star that walks on water? If your gut tells you you're performing at a lower level than your peers then you may want to start looking around. The performance appraisal at Q is basically a rack and stack ordering of employees and then a nitpicking contest as your manager (hopefully) goes to bat for you.

Qualcomm can be a brutal toxic company, that's why I left and I'm much happier!

It costs today near $400k to get a college degree in America; then companies like Q replace new graduates by Indi.ans: pretty cool system!!

I had a 4 rating on my first performance review and and was laid off.

You better find the right a-s to kiss quick!... or you are toast.

OP, you are in the process of being replaced by cheaper H.1-B that they are bringing over from Ind-ia

It's pretty bad. You will be in the chopping board for the next layoff. You will basically have no career. No promos ever. That's because you are probably a smart guy and the stinky Indians hate you. Find a different job and quit right at the milestone !
