Thread regarding The Wall Street Journal layoffs

WSJ Article about Layoffs and jobless claims

WSJ you published an article on September 18, 2024 titled "Jobless claims fall to lowest level since May"

Currently, UI only lasts for26 weeks, then one is not allowed to claim any further unless they are reemployed by the same employer for at least 90 days within their benefit year.

Additionally, receiving benefits is factored by a Base Period, the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before the quarter in which you file for benefits. If you have enough wages in your Basic Base Period, we use it when we calculate your benefit payment.

Some people are being caught in layoffs that do not allow for collection UI as they are outside of the base period if they worked less than a year.

People are still jobless as the claims cannot be filed.
