Thread regarding 3M layoffs

3M RTO and the real issue

RTO shouldn’t be the top concern for most employees. I think most reasonable 3M employees would accept a balanced return to office if it wasn’t for longtime patterns of mistreatment of people who do real work each day. RTO is simply icing on the cake for employees suffering under layers of:

Bad policy
Poor job descriptions
Lack of clear goals
Constantly changing priorities
Ridiculous initiatives
Lack of training support
Leadership messaging suggesting employees are inferior in the marketplace
Work overload
Constant threat of cuts
Poor working environments
Throwaway culture created over the past two or three years
Lack of proper tools
Unwillingness to truly support safety needs
Poor treatment of key suppliers and partners
Clawback of incentives
Reduction in quality or elimination of retirement plans
Lesser quality insurance packages over the years
Bad decision making by so many weak leaders
No clear vision for future growth
Poor communication and alignment at all levels for teams often working against each other or doubling up on efforts unnecessarily
Minimal opportunity for Job satisfaction
Micromanaging things big and small
Lack of advancement opportunity
So much more

Salary is the thing keeping many here, but at the expense of employee mental health. This is evident to anyone who’s been at 3M for any period of time.

@2fge -- well said.

A job is a job; we work for money, and anyone who thinks otherwise has been sold a bill of goods.

Pining for the old days won't fix anything, and taking on with we aren't being paid to do won't bring job satisfaction or work-life balance or more advancement opportunities.

We are cogs in the machine, and we are replaced when we don't serve their needs anymore. Play the game they started and find your way to win, because they are your opponent.

3M has changed (alot) and without question, no longer the company it once was; but neither is anything these days. As hard as it is to do, and as frustrating as it can be, for your own well-being, focus on what you want, learn and leverage any opportunities you can until a better option presents itself because 3M does not feel your frustrations and you are only hurting yourself and wasn't your time..... take better care of yourself not only for you, but for those that matter in your life.....signed: from someone who's been there.

This post is funny. While some of your reasons may be legitimate (clawback of incentives, job satisfaction [which you control]), many of your reasons are completely subjectable:

Ridiculous Initiatives - What does this mean? Goals you can't meet?
Poor Working Environments - What does this mean? Office too cold/hot, machines breaking down?
Lesser Quality Insurance - have you conducted surveys to see how we compare? Our deductibles and premiums are way better than other companies.
Unwillingness to support safety needs - 3M Fully supports safety but employees become complacent.
Elimination of Retirement Plans - Again, have you completed a survey to see how many companies still offer a Pension Plan? I would guess less than 15% of all companies.
Bad Policy - What does this even mean?

Those of you who agree with this original post are unhappy with your job. You can't control what the company does. You CAN control what you do. So go find another job and quit complaining. But you won't because it really isn't that bad and you have no idea how bad it can be with another company. Trust me, talking with my friends, I know it can be a lot worse. But hey, if this makes you feel better, here is your pat on the back. And no, I am not with management, but have worked for 3M for 30 years.

You may not agree with me completely, but the entire management system is corrupt and has created an interest group

This really does hit the nail on the head, although I think you're looking at it in reverse.

It's not that they're trying to get people to accept RTO, it's that they're using RTO as just another straw that they're intentionally adding to our camel-backs. They're piling more and more on to us with the hopes that enough people will leave.

They have a target number and they haven't reached it yet. The plan is to get things lean enough that the balance sheet looks good to prospective buyers.
